New House Build in WV

Found that my opening for the rear French door, that I picked up today, wasn’t big enough, so had to adjust the rough opening a bit. Hope to get that door in tomorrow as well.
!

My slider in back was a little tight getting the frame in , so the door is a little tight opening. Been meaning to redo it for 20 yrs now.
You did good by fixing it now!!

Looks nice, and a pretty sunset!

How will you fill under the rear door down to the decking?

It’s easy to not take the time to correct something like that when your doing it all yourself and pressed for time. Mine had to be moved 1 3/4”, so no choice but to do it.

Happy with how the door worked out, but man are those double doors hard to get just right. Took a while, that’s for sure.

Good progress. The sooner you can keep the north winds out, and get the inside temp comfortable, the better....

Absolutely. Huge difference this evening after all the windows and doors were in. We also put leftover zip sheeting on the garage side of the wall between the garage and house. With the torpedo heater on, it was pretty comfortable to work inside as we cleaned up for the night.

Problem is, if I raised them up, they wouldn稚 be even with the other doors and windows. The glass is double strength and tempered. Not sure if that is the same as safety glass or not. Fortunately, we have no more inspections, so that won稚 be an issue. Biggest problem is fitting an outlet under the window between the window trim and base molding. May just wait and cut those in after all the trim is in.

I checked and tempered glass is good. They want it so if someone fell through the window that there won't be a big chunk of glass above that could come down like a guillotine.

When I ordered my windows, I believe I remember the sales man saying all windows over a certain size, had to have tempered glass. Maybe I remember wrong though. Either way, I know our 6’ tall windows, and the picture window in the kitchen have it for sure. I am wanting to say that we added it to all windows, but would have to go back to the original paperwork to know for sure.

We have two low windows in our place (Hurricane WV) and when we bought the new ones we were told they wouldn't even sell non-tempered for a window that was less than 18" off the floor.

I'm pretty sure all of mine are. Even the 4x4s in the shop.

Took this evening off from the build, just needed a break. Plus it’s pretty cold out and will be a bit warmer the rest of the week. My BIL had an electrical issue, so I went out there and helped him figure that out.

Waiting to hear if we will be pouring concrete in the garage on Friday.

Also need to order gravel to extend the driveway up to the garage. I plan to put driveway fabric down. I like 57’s over crusher run for areas close to the house to keep the dust down, but wondering if I should put a layer of bigger rock down first? Is so, what is a good size, 2”? I don’t really want anything too big as the surface will be scraped off and a concrete parking pad poured outside the garage next spring. I want to let the ground settle before pouring concrete.

I always use #3 gravel as a base under crusher run or #57. #3 also works well to stabilize muddy areas for me.

#3 sounds like it might be exactly what I need. I’ll see if either of my local yards have any when I call tomorrow. Thanks!

I use G&A Stone over by Milton a lot. They are great to deal with and do a greta job spreading with almost no tractor work needed.

I’ll have to see if they come this far, Shamblin Stone is the closest and who I usually use. Price of rock has gone crazy, that’s for sure, been paying about $820 for 25 tons.

Worth a shop, that is for sure. Stone is getting stupid expensive. Im fairly close to G&A so he does a lot of our projects/road. Very reasonable delivery but I think he only runs a 10 ton truck so that maybe a problem if you need large quantities at a time.

Railroad ballast works well people locally use VDOT number ones size of soft ball but personally prefer RR Ballast

I need at least 75 tons, so probably go with the big trucks on this one. I do have a section of driveway that has over head wires that a big truck cannot go under with the bed up, and a 10 ton truck is needed, I’ll definitely give them a call when I get to that section.

What is overall cost on 75 tons? Do I remember right that you are going to remove this gravel to compact the ground later on? How does compaction figure in? Maybe you might do the project in two stages.

That would be a good to very good price for crushed gravel here in Colorado. Delivery to the mountains would make it higher.

75 tons will be right at $2,500 delivered. The ground is already fairly well compacted, But could still settle some through the freeze/thaw cycles of this winter. This layer should stay intact, but some could be graded off when I level things out to pour the parking pad outside the garage next spring, since I’ll have to build up to the top of the garage floor to access the garage. The parking pad is only about 1/3 of the total area I’m putting the gravel.

My current plan is to put a 3-4 inch layer of #3 and cover it with a layer of 57. Only the 57 should be graded off later when I pour concrete and it can then be moved to other areas of the driveway as needed.

It’s been a slow week, but I did pick up the driveway fabric and got it laid out after dark in preparation for the gravel that will be delivered tomorrow morning.

Also got a lot of stuff cleaned up and one room mostly wired.

Shopping kitchen cabinets has been very discouraging. They seem to cost much more than I expected, but we want a nice kitchen that will last a long time. Will likely place our order Monday after taking the weekend to make sure we have what we want accounted for. Looks like it will take about 8 weeks for them to be built. That’s not a problem as it will surely take me that long to get ready for them, probably longer.
