I recently ( about a month ago) had my BX23S tractor at the dealer to replace a blown shaft seal on the rear right tire, at the same time the dealer did the 200 hour service. I transported the tractor to my property on a trailer and parked it in a storage container. I went to get my tractor this week to get ready for plowing season and found upon starting it a massive leak underneath and to the right of the seat. Hydraulic fluid was spraying out, I only managed to back it out of the container and immediately put it back in before all hydraulics went dead ( lack of fluid ). It completely drained in about 60 seconds.

So my question is, does anyone have any similar experience or any clues as to what might cause this.

By the time I got the tractor back in the container, there was hydraulic fluid everywhere and it was impossible to determine where the leak came from. Unfortunately my tractor is in a fairly remote location and not readily accessible by tilt-load so getting it to the dealer would be a huge undertaking......

I intend to get some fluid, top it up and then start it to see where the leak/spray is coming from, I'm hoping for a blown hose........

Any ideas/information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I think I would give it a good look over BEFORE adding the hydraulic fluid or starting the tractor. That sounds like a significant leak, likely caused by something that may be obvious...

That happened to me after my 200hr hydraulic service, it was my Hydraulic filter seal blew on startup. I actually hand tightened it and expected it to pull even more tight upon startup, but the rubber O-ring on the filter failed or more correctly was not in proper position, probably was binding because i did not lubricate it before tightening. This then creates an instant catastrophic loss of hydraulic fluid under the tractor. Extremely messy situation.

And then my neighbor had this happen to him when he accidentally swapped and installed his Hydraulic filter where his HST filter goes, and the HST was installed where the Hydraulic filter goes. Same result on startup, oil blew everywhere. So I bet its not a hose, but leaking filters.

If you can't get the BX back to your dealer, recommend you just cleanup as much as possible, and then put a plastic sheet down. Do a visual check to make sure it really is filter leaks causing the problem. Reinstall both filters in their proper location, making sure to hand tighten and lubricate the filter o-ring. Fill with required amount of hydraulic fluid. Talk to your dealer he should give you a free hydraulic service next 200 hrs.

Be sure that filter changes didn't leave a rubber seal stuck in place vs coming off with the old filter. Having two is a sure bet to create a leak.

If tightened to seat fully the seals will be crammed into enough space for just one and twist or distort.

Anecdotes abound about how quickly the reservoir can be drained when this happens.

If BX23S is based on the BX3380 series the FEL joystick is above tire - may have a loose hydraulic line fitting.

Put a wrench on all the fittings ends and check for one that was loose.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I had a look underneath and it turns out that it was a defective or improperly installed filter. The housing had split from the metal base ring, perhaps over tightened? I'm going to the dealer with the filter figuring I should be owed a replacement and the fluid to match as they are the last and only people to service the tractor. Thanks again to everyone who responded.
