^^^ When you're on a ladder doing a task, you're (usually) awake, alert and aware of your surroundings. When in a tree stand trying to be still so as not to scare game off, some apparently fall asleep and ....

He went on to say
There is some risk associated with most activities. I am an adult in a mostly free country and don’t need “they” to decide what kind of deer stand I use.
(bold is mine)

I don't care for tree stands, I don't like heights and can't sit still long enough to justify using one. Yet it doesn't follow that I should tell somebody else they can't use one.

Don't tree stands lessen the chance of horizontal shots, as you're usually aiming at a downward angle? That would lessen the chances of bullets going longer distances and unintentionally hitting people or property.

Therefore, we should require the use of tree stands when deer hunting.

Yikes!

Hunting from a home made or store bought tree stand is no more dangerous than using a ladder to paint or clean the gutters.....

That means it’s just as dangerous.

Falling is a leading cause of unintentional injury deaths.

I'm going to bed and never get up again, so I can die of boredom. First though I"ll have to bring my chainsaw in and cut the legs off... I wouldn't want to die falling out of bed. That would be a heck of a way to start the new year.

I have fallen walking down the hall but never fallen out of a tree stand and spend plenty of time setting in them. I did take a bit of a tumble from a ladder repairing a stand this year but I still want “they” to have any input in my tree stands.

I don't hunt anymore, but did a lot when younger. Are tree stands seen more in midwest, east coast? I never saw or knew anybody that used a tree stand.

They're becoming more and more popular as a way to get up and see more, while reducing the scent traces on the ground. If I ever build one it will have a roof and probably a small stove to perk coffee and cook lunch, as well as a small table to play solitaire on.

I've lived here in Northern Indiana for 60 years. I can't honestly say I've ever met anyone the doesn't hunt deer from a tree stand of some sort. When we bought our property around 1989 there were a couple dilapidated wooden stands on several trees. I removed them. The next deer season, several more appeared. I took them apart and left notes on the trees to remind them of the no hunting/no trespassing signs on the property. Several seasons after that I found nice new metal stands and took them to the county police station. I left notes on the trees as to where they could be found. Finally, the people that owned the property next to us asked if we'd let them hunt on our property, and I said sure. Gave them written permission to give to the conservation officers if questioned, etc... my neighbor has 3-4 stands on our place, and 3-4 more on his place. One on his place is pretty much a yard barn on stilts for his father to stay warm in. The ones on our place are nice metal stands with two legs and a ladder. He keeps an eye on our place and has asked several people to leave over the years. And in return, every so often he gives us some tasty venison. :licking:
