Very good tips, Eddie. Thank you.

Eddie, the total pour was over 3 days, and the concrete supplier I used for the first day, came with just a little too much water, and off course no slump test was done. I noticed surface spalling was occurring in some minor areas the next morning, and so the water content of the mix was reduced for next two work days and slump test done for each truck.

The crews doing the spreading were only allowed to use small hand held spray bottles, for finishing corners and edges of the slab.

Crews want water added because it lowers their work necessary with come-alongs.
Pathetic reasons, but I have seen it.
Im always guarding the chute. Water only added if its warranted

I agree, anyone who pours a slab at 4"s in my humble opinion is just asking for failure

Yes, when you see the middle inch is mostly steel, one can see why 4 is pretty minimal

County road guy was just here, gave a thumbs up for what we want to do. He recommended a 6" slab.

6 inch with some rods in it for that size is plenty for light trucks and even slow crossing of larger ones.

We just did permanent concrete at our ranch gate entrance a few months ago, and also did the garage area at same time. We used 4000psi strength concrete at 5.5 inches thick, with 1/2" rebar at 16" grid spacing, with 6 Guage welded wire sheets laying down on top of the rebar. All rebar was placed on 2.5" plastic risers which elevates the rebar above the water vapor ground sheet and directly into middle of the concrete slab.View attachment 682188View attachment 682189
Need to know subgrade to properly design concrete. With unknown subgrade I would use 6 as minimum
For strength ,rebar or wire should be near bottom of slab. Middle is wrong spot
As Eddie Said excess water is bad for slab durability

Well the nice thing about 5 1/2" is that it is a 2x6 in height for a form.
To get a full six inch you would need different forms.

Just place your 2x6 form 1/2 inch off the ground. :D
