I wonder how slow they'll let Starlink go down to, as they oversell it?

It's cold like Russia down here....

They seem to be focusing on rural areas .. where the major phone carriers won't run fiber to. I'd much rather have fiber here as it's weather proof .. not sure what big rain storms do to StarLink reception. We have AT&T fiber at the Richmond house. Everybody feels like they're in a 3rd world country .. with our crappy Excede internet at the ranch. I'm used to it but .. it sure would be nice to have faster service.

I'm thinking $100 / month will keep it from being "oversold" Kyle.

BTW .. if I've not mentioned it .. I paid my $99 and anxiously awaiting my chance to be a Guinea pig "Beta Tester".

Good evening all. 13F for the start, overcast with periods of snow/snow pellets, dusting on ground. Falling temps through day, serious snow began 4:30, have not gone out to measure. Forecast amounts of 5-p inches snow. High temp for day was at 12:01 AM 19F low forecast to be 9F at 11:59. More snow Tuesday night Wednesday morning about 6 inches. Cleaned ashes, then stoked fire, watch Chapel on FB live, in person was canceled. Pull truck into garage and made wife's breakfast. Conserved energy most of the day, did light kerosene heater and mount bike in stationary trainer and pedal for 20 minutes and did get nap in and refill wood wagon, it was cold out there! :cold:

Good evening. It's 21° here, feels like 8° and dropping to 13° in the morning. We've had freezing rain most of the day but, it started snowing about 7 p.m.

Sorry about pictures .. it's dark here.

Tailgate on my F-350 .. frozen shut. Whacked it a time or two with my hand .. no joy.

Mail box .. frozen shut. Slapped it once, with my hand, .. Voila! .. JOY? Saturday mail.

Patricia closed her office for tomorrow and advised employees that Tuesday closing was possible.

GD Maddie .. texted me that it's snowing in San Marcos.

Hope everyone staying safe and warm tonight.

Good to hear from Ted!

Prayers to all

I have the same concerns about overselling the service, Rick. Then again, it seems like there's lots of scalability in the satellite constellation concept, at least according to the engineering side of the house. But we all know that the bean counters have a way of ruining a beautiful engineering concept by insisting that the dollars come out positive.

Here's a video of a guy reading through a Reddit discussion put on by the Starlink engineers with a sort of FAQ presentation. If even half the answers come to fruition, it'll still be a heck of a lot better than any current satellite service out there.

And FWIW, after two dish realignments, the HughesNet signal here almost never goes out, even in heavy rain. Seemed to work with a couple inches of snow last time, too. The Starlink satellites are only 1/7th the altitude of the geostationary satellites, so maybe their signal is even stronger?

Anyway, there are a ton of Youtube videos out there put up by the beta testers, and I haven't found one yet where they are unhappy with the service. HughesNet, Viasat, and Exede have all been so bad that the $600 ante to get hooked up with Starlink seems like a good bet. And they do offer a 30 day free trial.

low forecast to be 9F at 11:59.

We just hit 9˚F at 11:38PM. still dropping, snowing, north wind at 18mph, wind chill 1˚F.

If they just would have said Global Cooling instead of Global Warming the whole state of Texas would be believers this week.

21 right now...high in the upper 20's today. Snow coming in tonight, possibly mixed with sleet. Going to be an ugly night, I think...

Good morning, temperature has crept up above freezing, we are returning to puddles of runny water instead of sheets of solid ice. Probably one more day left to enjoy a world without mud while the ground thaws out.

... any guesses if my shallow pond will freeze over? ...
Yes, unless there is some kind of agitation.

C'mon you lazy pond, don't let a few measly degrees steal your heat while you just lay there chilling out, doing nothing with all that free heat below. You are just a pathetic wet hole in the ground...

Toppop, how many harsh words does it take to get a Texas pond agitated ? :)

good morning all.
Relatively warm 33 out now and not going up at all, later today weather goes nasty when that front coming across the country gets here.
Looks like a lot of us will be cold and shoveling the white stuff for a few days. So far most of forecast is ice here, hope the power stays on.
No slips
No falls

Ted, great you are home and recovering. Listen to your wife...

Need to pour first cup of coffee. 10° with snow this morning. Heading to 15° with up to 6" of new snow. Maybe. Every forecast this winter of anything over 2" has missed it targeted amount. Got drive and walkways cleaned up yesterday. Sorted pictures. Going to start converting slides/film to digital today.
No other plans.
Squirrel took it's branch back from hawk. Hawk in my picture was about same size as squirrel. Squirrel was making all kinds of noise.

Eric, if Randy has a plan to agitate a Texas pond. I have one in Michigan that is in bad need of agitation. Not even sure if bubbler is still working. Everything is buried under foot of snow.

LS, glad you are home recovering.

David. I have a list of to do things in my papers when I can no longer post. One is for TBN.

Don, but those names have been changed to Climate Change. When I was younger. We called it Weather.

Check, I do not believe in reincarnation. But I have 2 GGD's One was born on my birthday. The other was born on my wife's birthday. Both natural births.

Buckeye, my son ended up with my Mini Drone. He has been flying it in the house from one to the other and up and down stairs. He has not shared any video with me yet. Both videos you post were good.

Riptides, take care handling dead skunk.

Rick, there is something wrong with that Texas snow. Wrong color.

Thomas, tractor did a good job on snow.

Mostly, got 2 large boxes of purses and wallets. There is a local charity that takes does a garage sale every spring that is going to take them. Took me couple of hours to make sure there was nothing in any of them of importance. Some of the purses must have had 20 pockets in them.

DFT, in Michigan we have to file a tax return even if you are exempt. Anyone over 75 years old does not pay Michigan income tax. :confused3:

Kyle, hope you are family are getting better.

Everyone stay safe and healthy.

Good Morning All.
