For the Solar disbelievers here is a system designed and built to heat a community of new build homes. It has been working for a number of years now.

With attribution, I'll poach that link Egon, and toss it into an AltNRG thread.

Relevant to this thread..... ultimate goal for me would be an EV for local use, totally charged by my own resources.

With a nod to The Who....... Meet the New Boss, Same as the Old Boss...... is not where I want to end up with an EV. Once the temporary rebates are off, we'll be back to something like 25 cents/kwh here, once the fairy-tale fees are paid.....

Sounds like Texas is having rolling blackouts due to the weather. There would be even more problems with thousands of cars being charged during this event.

This is what change sounds like in the early days. I think I'm hearing the modern day version of "It's a good thing we kept our horse and buggy, because there aren't enough gas stations around".

lots of people complaining about the new Bolt and Bolt EUV, but they are cheaper than the outgoing model. they are the cheapest EV's in the US market with a decent range, i think the base leaf is cheaper with 100 miles less range. they are going to fill out the lineup, but decided to roll out a budget option first. with typical GM discounts and whatever you should be able to get one of these for 25k ish. cheap enough that if you have a car, and are paying for gas, and you buy one of these and make payments, the payments will be around the cost of the fuel for the other car. makes it nearly free to own.
How so? If you are spending $50 a week in gas (around 400 miles a week in something that gets 20MPG with fuel at $2.50/gallon) you are spending $2600 a year on fuel.
That would make the Bolt (at $25k) take almost 10 years to break even on fuel (not counting repairs, taxes, charging cost, interest, etc).

They probably got the same designer that just ruined the GM trademark to redesign the Bolt exterior.

Unfortunately for GM I don't think anyone will come around, like some did on the Cyber truck.

GM missed an opportunity here, they could have made the new Bolts big sellers

But, That would have required inspired exterior design

Sign 'O the Times...... when we are now debating the looks of EVs...... :)

But yah, with ya there...... does kinda have that Aztek with Batteries thing going on.....

I guess they don't winterize the windmills down in Texas. My cousin's wife says snow, where she lives is very rare.

The windmills are frozen because of global warming. :confused2:

The frozen natural gas supply was a greater problem than frozen windmills. Both are fixable in the future.

Yes, exactly. Texas did not have or use the equivalent of snow plows on the wind turbines.

Can not let those things spin with ice on the blades as they will eventually throw the ice off at high speeds. For instance the 1.5MW GE wind turbine has a rotor diameter of 70m (230') with a top tip speed of 82m/s, or 180 MPH. Now think about one turbine throwing ice at another?

Now, consider the fiasco which has ensued and ask yourself, "Do I want this quality of management responsible for my health care? Or for that matter, anything?"

But why did the geniuses who got Texas into this situation not fix it before it was broken?

I've given up trying to understand why Texas does what it does.

wind turbines that I used to work on came in 2 configurations, a cold climate and a warm climate version. turbines in Wyoming run when its -40 but they also are more complex.

some generating capacity is/was offline for maintenance and upgrade as this is usually a lower demand time of year. NG pipeline pressures became low and reduced the output of NG power production because everyone was using it, some wells and valves and things froze, but that is not a widespread issue. I also have 11 years working in O&G production. the biggest issue was the widespread nature of the cold. even in CO we were asked to reduce our power and NG usage.

keep blocking / protesting those pipelines and reducing our ability to produce the energy we need to see this become a more widespread issue.
