A garden tractor has the frame and transmission to do ground engaging work with a rear lift hitch of some type(either sleeve hitch for catagory 0 three point hitch). This includes rototillers, one bottom mold board dirt plow, disc harrow, chisel plow/ground ripper and so forth. A lawn tractor cannot handle this type of stress. Lawn tractors mow your grass pull a lawn cart and with care, push or blow snow. Some of the higher end lawn tractors can just barely handle a lawn roller but most will just overheat and burn up the cheap hydrostatic transmissions they use these days. Those lack enough capacity of fluid to stay cool under a load, such as pulling a heavy lawn roller. Many older garden tractors, and a couple current ones like the Cub Cadet XT3 are shaft driven between the engine and transmission instead of a belt, and use a horizontal crankshaft engine(like a big tractor) instead of a vertical crankshaft engine(like a push mower). It's a lawn mower not tractor, which stays cleanest while garden tractor stays filthy. Yard tractor is in the middle. None are a real tractor tractor, like a moped isn't a real motorcycle.

Much of the difference appears to be what the seller wants to call it. A Craftsman yard tractor is basically a riding mower - perhaps a larger one. Their garden tractor looks the same and may even have the same engine. The transaxle is heavier duty but otherwise they're pretty similar.

Garden tractor is designed for yards with gardens and can handle maintaining yards and gardens. With a garden you will have some capacity for ground engagement equipment. My take is a garden tractor supposedly has a thicker frame and beefier transaxle as well as bigger rear tires.

In my mind, garden, lawn and yard tractors are "tractors" in name only.

A real tractor STARTS with some of the size pictured above, or maybe a MF 35 or 8N. Tractor suggests TRACTION. BIG WHEELS. At least TWO.

A really good rating system (for tractors as well as UTVs) would be how much SNOW can one dive through. I know snow can vary in type.

That tractor in your photos is farm tractor. You would have to have a LARGE garden to use that in.

LOL. That's all everyone around here farms a garden with. I guess everyone has a large garden. Mine this year will be .4 to .5 acres. That's not very large. That's one of a pair of 140s that i just traded for. That one is in perfect condition. The second one needs some work but is still all original. I've always wanted one and am stoked about finally getting two of them.

To me a garden tractor has a 3 point hitch and PTO, yet is small enough to work an average garden. Mine is 15 HP

That tractor has a single point Fasthitch. There were implements made specifically for it. But for plowing and side dressing a garden the rear and belly lift carried the cultivators. That's what makes it such a perfect machine for working a garden. Besides that, you just look down and you can see your crop as it is being plowed.

.4 Ac. is larger then MOST of the populations entire lots including the house & garage.

Cubs and 100s are really hard to come by. I see As now and again but there were so many 140s around here you can actually find them. They are really expensive and it is almost impossible to find one in the shape mine is in. Even the second one I'm getting is really good but there is an issue with the smoking engine. I'll probably completely refurbish that one and sell it.

How are attachment parts to come by?

I got most everything for cultivating with this tractor. I just bought a fasthitch one row planter. Some things are still available and some things are being made on the aftermarket. Ag Supply has quite a bit of the items. I have no interest in a disc, bush hog or ant other fasthitch ground engaging implements. My need was for planting, cultivating, side dressing and middlebusting.
