My airbag (SRS) light has been on for a few months. Dealer scoped it and his scanner up came B1811 SRS Code replace ECU. $1200 for the part alone, no oem anymore, need aftermarket. Ok, so I bought an Actron OBD reader finally for another vehicle's issue. Next was to read the airbag car with my reader. Same code, but with a database in it showing most likely cause: Shorted Clock-Spring in steering column. New OEM part $80, new aftermarket part $40. I caved and got the OEM part. Watched a few youtubes on how to make the change and in 15 minutes my 'clock spring' was replaced and my airbag light was off.
I took the old 'clock spring' apart (its a ribbon wire wound around a set of rollers. Yep. there was a wear bar all the way through the ribbon insulation, so, probable cause. As easy and low cost as this was, there should be no hesitation to take care of this problem in your cars if this is the case. You need the airbags as well as you need seat belts these days.
