When I try to grab a pile of sand or snow I put the bucket down an inch above ground, but as I move forward, the bucket begins to
tilt upwards and doesn't pick up anything.

2) If i lift the loader all the way up, and then turn the bucket to unload, the buckets dangles instead of being firm.
Only when I reach the maximum down position then the bucket does lock. At this point I can lower the loader all the way down and
it will lift the front of the tractor.

However, if I try to lift the tractor when the bucket is not turned all the way down , even by an inch or two, the bucket will dangle
and I won't be able to lift the front.

Can anyone suggest what this may be caused by?
If it is the hydraulic system, where should I look first?

Thank you for your suggestions, you are a great bunch.

You may want to put this in the hydraulics section here on tbn.
It sounds as though your hydraulic flow is doing its job, but that your curl/dump cylinders are bypassing internally. That means the seals on the ram are bad. Most cylinders can be rebuild and kits are available.
Also there are hydraulic shops that do this work.
Good luck

That was also my thoughts....(bad seals in cylinders)

Farmer Marx, if you delve into that, and have never done it before, I'd urge you to give it a try if you are mechanically inclined. It's NOT difficult. A horror story I tell is taking my (dipperstick) cylinder to the dealer (first mistake) to be redone.... they charged me about $1,200 for it.....I about fainted.... he "worked me a deal" and took it down to $1,000.

I might add this was the last time I've ever stepped foot back in that place.

Years later (about 2 years ago) the same cylinder needed redone again so I thought I'd see what I can do.

It WAS hard to wrestle but got it off, apart.....bought the parts I needed..... FOR $75 and got it done.

Well worth the dirty hands!!

Bad seals do not cause drift in a cylinder with a rod at only one end. The drift is caused by valve leakage. Here is an article that explains it.

The Truth About Hydraulic Cylinder Drift - Performance Seals, Inc.

I agree to a point but not totally. You can get some drift but not a lot.

As a test try tipping the bucket 45 degrees or more. Lift the front of the tractor with the tipped bucket to determine how much drift there is. If you are only getting 5 to 10 degrees of drift then I would go after the piston seals. If the bucket drifts to a flat position then I would go after the valve.

Sounds more like a loose piston to me. If it is don't just re tighten there could be a o ring between piston and rod.

A loose piston is going to act the same thing as bad packing on the piston.

Run the test to narrow down whether the problem is in the ram or valve.

We can do one more test. I think that if the curl/dump cylinder has a bad internal piston seal so that it is bypassing internally, it will not be able to curl with a load in the bucket.

Also when the curl/dump valve is moved it won't make any difference which way the valve is moved. Because if the cylinder is bypassing internally and the control valve is working normally, any fluid flow into either end of the cylinder can only cause the curl/dump cylinder to to extend.

My understanding from the OP’s initial post is the bucket/ cylinders are doing as you described. As he attempts to load up his bucket, it dumps. He says does not remain level.
