I was looking around the Kawasaki website and noticed they have motorcycle specific oils and UTV/ATV oils. The question hit me as to why would they have different oils, so I looked into the details.

The motorcycle oils have the JASO classifications covered (of course) as well as API service SL. Looking at the UTV/ATV oils, they are recommended for gasoline or diesel applications requiring API SM, CF, CJ-4, JASO MA and JASO MA2. This wide service classification is interesting to me because this oil not only covers my motorcycle, but my John Deere garden tractor (Kawasaki air cooled engine) and my diesel compact utility tractor. Viscosity range I need is also covered.

The idea of only having one oil on the shelf for all my equipment is certainly appealing.

Yep, I do the same. Makes life simpler.... I use AMSOIL Premium Protection 10w40 (AMO) in my small equipment, my Yamaha Grizzly and my Kioti CK30 diesel tractor. However, it will not work in the newer diesels with DPF systems. Need the Signature Series diesel oils for those... Dutchy

some stuff is wet clutch, thus different oil, both my honda atv and motorcycle are wet clutch machines.

That is covered by the JASO MA spec of the UTV/ATV oil.

Another confusing factor is that any specification for the oil, be it JASO MA for motorcycles/wet clutches or any of the API specifications (spark ignition or compression ignition) require testing and payment to the issuing standards Institute for the testing as well as being able to list it on the package. So, there may not be any difference in a package of oil covering a wide range of standards.

well of course, but there is 0 way for us to know that, you really going to chance it? i was shocked that rotella diesel oil falls under jaso MA. i now run that in the gas powered honda's lol.

I went with the less oil on the shelf thing also. I basically put rotella 5w40 t6 in everything diesel and with a wer clutch. Any thing else gets super tech 5w30 full synthetic.

Way easier to stock only 2 oils and since I have started to see engine oil prices rise I have been stocking the shelfs deep!
