Best firearm for home protection? I realize a lot is personal choice involved?

No firearm should be accessible to a child or any one not provided the "code" or "sequence" for that matter. There are too many rapid access safes these days to not have them, many you wouldn't even know there was a firearm there.
They provide safety, security, and rapid access/deployment.

If I NEEDED a firearm for home protection I would sell everything and move to a better location. Worrying about which gun to carry is just another stress that shortens your life and enjoyment of it.

I wonder how many of us can actually do that? Many of us cannot leave. We have jobs in the area or businesses and our customer base we serve lives in our location.
I am very lucky. Im able to afford to live in a very nice area with low crime, but I also know the criminal elements are not too far away. Criminals know where the goods they want to steal are, the nice areas.

If you NEEDED a firearm for protection, how much money do you think you could sell your house? Enough to go somewhere nice and safe? Not a chance.

That is the problem for many.

How far are you from the Baltimore jungle?

Going back to the original title "Best Firearm for Home Protection".

After a LOT of thought I purchased a S&W 642 Revolver with CT laser and a biometric gun safe to store it in. For a firm believer in the KISS principle (Keep It Simple Stupid) this may seem like too much technology but I was looking for simplicity of getting the firearm in my or my wife's hands from a childproof secure location. A point and shoot firearm with an automatic aiming laser, put the dot on target and pull the trigger, for high stress situations like a 2AM intruder in the house. No safeties, magazines, or anything else to complicate the procedure. The small gun safe has mine and wife's fingerprints stored plus both daughters and son-in-laws. A couple of false alarms have proven the idea.

If I knew I was going to go into a battle with a handgun I would want a hi-capacity automatic. But for that 2AM wake up and defend myself I want a revolver.

Not too far. Maybe 1.25 hours.....
Wilmington DE only 10-15 minutes. Lots of murders and crime there.
Philly is 45 minutes. One of the big 3 for crime in the USA.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but even a "better" place could still be subject to you needing to be ready to defend yourself. Out in the remote country isn't even a guarantee like it may have once been.
To me having one good self defense weapon or more is no different or stressful than having to decide on having the right fire extinguishers around the house, garage, shop, vehicles, tractor, etc.
In fact I enjoy researching, purchasing and practicing with firearms way more than I do fire extinguishers. :)

You ever been shot with one? :p
9MM vs. .45ACP. Do we have any idea how many thousands of magazine articles over the years have had something like that in their title? The debate of whether it is better to have a 115 gr. bullet going well above 1200 fps or literally a bullet that is twice as heavy at 230 grs. at around 850 fps. Not to mention a bullet diameter of .355 vs. a bullet of .451 diameter. Oh, the mind boggles. :)
