9MM vs. .45ACP. Do we have any idea how many thousands of magazine articles over the years have had something like that in their title? The debate of whether it is better to have a 115 gr. bullet going well above 1200 fps or literally a bullet that is twice as heavy at 230 grs. at around 850 fps. Not to mention a bullet diameter of .355 vs. a bullet of .451 diameter. Oh, the mind boggles. :)
Yeah, I started watching that rabbit hole on youtube last night. Energy. Speed. Weight. People hate this, love that. Most of them seemed to get hung up on the magazine capacity and that they were going to have a gun battle in their house and it would take 4 mags of this to equal 2 mags of that, etc...

I also noticed a lot of people doing these videos are fans of ballistic gel, but none of them that I saw had bones in them. I wonder what would happen if you got shot in the shoulder, breastbone, femur, etc... with either of them.

Truth is, it would suck to get shot by either.

And probably biggest lesson to take away is no matter what you'd choose for home defense, the most important things are quick access and proficiency. Gotta practice if it's gonna be of any use.

If I NEEDED a firearm for home protection I would sell everything and move to a better location. Worrying about which gun to carry is just another stress that shortens your life and enjoyment of it.
in 1989 my wife and I bought 20 acres out in the country, well away from town. We struck up a conversation with the elderly woman that lived in one of 3 houses directly across the highway from it. They were the only houses for a mile in either direction. We mentioned we were thinking of building out there, and were looking to get away from the crime in the city. She just shook her head. Her husband was knocked unconscious and robbed on their front steps a few years before, and all the houses had burglaries or attempted burglaries. A few years later, the house to her right became a crack house. It was eventually torn down.

Truth is, bad people are mobile.

Truer words were never spoken. And yes bad guys are mobile and can appear anywhere. Even on your doorstep.

With that, it's a nice day out, I might go out and take some swings at the old t-ball.

A couple of days ago I went out and built a new antenna. A 20 meter vertical with elevated radials. I had quite a bit of trouble and it took longer than I expected and about wore me out. The biggest problem is the fact I don't have any flat ground to stand on. The base of this antenna out in the woods is on about a 45 degree angle. I made the most progress when I employed the tractor to build a gravel and concrete block platform to have something to stand on that was flat so I could work on the antenna feedpoint. I got it all adjusted and working well. The weather was great. In the 60's and sunny.

All of that started back in the days when there were only FMJ bullets available. Now you have to add in dozens of types of expanding bullets.

It isn't about where you live or the area you venture into; it's all about YOU choosing to take control and be responsible for your own self defense and the safety of your family. If the world was a perfect place I wouldn't own a gun, till then I'm armed and dangerous.

Honestly I'm growing fonder and fonder of my PMR handgun (only problem right now is finding ammo for it). I bought it originally for the kids, but it does seem like it would make a good home defense handgun.

30 rounds of .22mag are nothing to sneeze at particularly at close quarters.

At the end of the day, if someone is pointing a gun at you, the last thing you're thinking IMO is what caliber the gun is and if it will hurt you.

The best gun for home defense is anyone you feel most comfortable with and proficient using IMO.

You wouldn't Wolf? :)

Years ago (in the 80s) I read an article. More people died of .22 rounds than any other and most died within 48 hours. If you want your assailant to languish a bit, and not get off so easy, maybe .22 isn't a bad choice. AND you save money!
