The "rule of thumb" here in Missouri is 1.5-2 acres per cow/calf pair for a year. We have some poor clay hill country but it still grows good pasture. My neighbor rotates grazing on the pasture next to me and hays it once a year.
Our love for the horse is the horse's worst enemy.
Only large animal running free range in my area is White Tail Deer. They have no problem finding something to eat. People from all over the U.S. come here to hunt Deer in the Fall.
