I don't have a tall enough trailer. yet. But I have been thinking of making a cutting table then I can just load the logs from that to the splitter.
That's a good option too. BUT, if you have to buy the materials to build a decent table, I'd put that money towards a trailer instead.

A trailer is just so much more useful and still can be used as your "table".

BackRoad - If you have a International "stick" you don't need the chart. Goes up to 36". On the back 14, 16, 18, and 20 feet.

That rule is what I use too, I cruised a woods a few days ago, there was some really NICE aspen in it, along with red oak and blk. cherry.

The owner wants me to cut trees out on shares, he mostly wants aspen cut/milled for a building project he has planned...

You use it up on your own projects too fast . . . :)
That I do, and that's really the only reason I cut it or why I bought my sawmill!! Already paid for itself and more!

Here's my latest.. little garden shed..

I've wanted a mill for years, and almost bought a Belsaw circular mill about 15 years ago but couldn't catch up with the guy. He was holding it for me but had someone else who was really interested, and I told him that if somebody had cash in hand that was who I would sell it to.
Until recently I could cut and sell the trees, then buy what I needed for less than it would cost to saw them.
Not anymore though... everything is 4 times what it was a year ago. I just mailed a deposit on a bottom of the line Woodmizer. I still will be selling some wood to offset the cost but have retained enough spruce for framing anything I may want to build, and will saw the low value hemlock for my own use.

Now I just have to wait about 18 weeks for them to build and ship, then I need to learn how to use it.

Not that difficult to use, just a little elbow grease needed is all. You say a bottom of the line woodmizer.. fully manual then I'm guessing? It'll be fun.

Thank you, Mr. Gordon.

I deal with a few local Amish sawyers when I buy green cut...they've been running .55 per board foot for pine and hemlock. Historically, not significantly cheaper than kiln dried at HD if only buying a few pieces.

I've bought a bunch of green from the Amish for board and batten siding and some outbuilding projects.

But now, it's a fair bargain compared to commercial pricing!

Thanks for the detail in your explanation.

Very helpful...fills in some gaps in understanding the full end to end.

Mr. Hunt, have you treated your wood, based on that greenish tint?

(Can't believe that is mold? 'course, being in South Carolina, maybe??!!)

Yes, all manual. From what I hear, the hardest part is learning to get everything uniform. I'll be using it for out buildings so a little deviation won't matter.

I have treated my wood, I use this stuff..
It says its good for ground contact and water contact for 30 years or some such , the longest I've had it on anything is a couple years so I don't have any idea if their claim is good but it seems to work pretty well so far.

Well being that I too have a full manual mill , if you have any questions just ask, I was in your position of figuring all this out about 3 years ago. A large planer will help but not necessary , I picked up a used 16" jet that I like.
One thing that I did notice is that if you cut boards to like actual 2" x 4" they will not shrink down to 1 1/2x 3 1/2 so for use rough cut I cut pretty close to that 1 1/2 x 3 1/2 size...
