Bank Woes

Been with the local bank for 40+ years. Never, ever had a problem.

I can still remember when we opened our accounts at this bank - 1981. They were offering 6 month money market certificate - 14.5% interest. The wife almost went berserk. Rather than starting to build our house - she wanted to live on the property for 6 months, in a tent, collect the interest.

That doesn't say anything bad about the local bank. It sure is a statement on condition of our national economy.

Hate to ask, but exactly what happened per the lying?

If you actually have money to deposit in the bank, not certain what the "hidden fees" are?
More than one lie. Several in fact.

The hidden fee was on a linked account transfer between banks. No charge for an inbound transfer, but a few dollars for an outbound. It wasn't disclosed anywhere until you went to the confirmation screen.
Never had a single fee from my Credit Union. Been with them since the mid 90's. Even when I was not working (in school) and thus did not have direct deposit, not a single fee.... unless I used an out of network ATM.

Credit Union all the way. Lower loan rates, better interest on deposits. In 30 year I've never had a fee I can remember. My CU belongs to a network that has 26,000 ATMs, not that I use cash much, but free ATMs throughout North America.
For one thing, their loan rates were something like 10% for the tractor whereas I'm paying under 3% through the dealer. ATM fees are another thing -- confusing as to when they apply or don't. One of them offers check deposit by mobile phone (which I would never do), but charges a fee for it. None of the banks I've checked do. I can deposit by computer to USAA and Chase banks without fees. The one bank I'm now leaving would take check deposits by mobile phone, but not by computer.

The CUs also have monthly fees if you don't make a certain number of transactions regardless of your balance.

I wanted one local bank since some merchants won't take checks from out of town banks and charge extra for Credit or Debit cards.

Ive been with Wells Fargo for over 20 years, and have never seen a single bank charge except for safe deposit box. But I have a rather large balance at all times. I have accounts in 2 credit unions, have better rates, but don’t have safe deposit boxes available. I have also never seen a single charge for any of my accounts.

must be your mountain top giving you issues.

now don’t start with BofA... they want to charge me for cash deposits. I dropped them years ago when they placed a 3 day hold on a cash deposit.

Yet have problem over the years with bamks but auto dealerships another thing,
Yeah, no kidding. Car dealers have to be the biggest sleazeballs in the world.

I can't say I've had any problems with banks over the years worth mentioning. I've been using a relatively local band for the past 10+ years with no problems whatsoever. Only downside is that you pay a fee to use an ATM outside their own network, but I use one so rarely it's not a big deal. Their customer service has always been very good.
Have no experience with credit unions. Don't most have eligibility restrictions?

My credit union has NONE of those fees. The loan rates at my CU are ALWAYS cheaper than the local bank.Never heard of monthly fees at my CU if you don't make a certain amount or transactions..

This is just some of the stuff I see when checking into Credit Unions.

5% Coin exchange could be subject to a fee up to 5% of the total amount of coin 5%

Tax Check Cashing Fee(if a member does not have deposits totaling $100 or more, a checking account or loan, there will be a check cashing fee)

$0.50 Xpress Mobile Deposit per check depositing fee

$5.00 Check Cashing Fee(if a member does not have deposits totalling $100 or more, a checking account or loan, there will be a check cashing fee)

It doesn't matter. Those kinds of nickle and dime fee schedules will turn me away. This is one I do use, but not when it would cost me money to move my own money between my own accounts. I sometimes do this a few times a month.
