Reading the thread on mice, I got to thinking about predators. One that came to mind was a mongoose. Then a snake. Then the old memories kicked in and I found myself wondering how that infamous rivalry came about. Turns out, it was all about toys.

Not exactly in the same vein but a competition rivalry none the less and from the past...it takes a lot beat Robin Ventura getting pummeled by Nolan Ryan while the latter had the former in a headlock...
...one of the all time best bench clearing dust ups ever in MLB...

...BTW...after that incidence Ventura was known as "Lumpy Venture"...!

I remember the story of Rikki Tikki Tavi from one of our children's literature books in grade school. That is where I learned about the little animal called a Mongoose.

Reading this reminded me of my old drag racing days at LaPlace LA. The most famous local AA fuel dragster team was the Candies - Hughes racing team and Q Ball Wales was their driver. This was a crowded meet because the most famous nationally known driver, Don Garlits with his Swamp Rat dragster was to be competing.

It came down to Don and Q ball would be in the final heat for the big money and the bets were on. Finally, Don boasted that he could beat Q ball without using the lights. That Q Ball could just start when he wanted and Don would then go. They agreed to that bet. Don did the burn out and stopped at the line waiting for Q ball. Q Ball did the burn out but didn't stop as Don expected. He had such a big headstart by the time Don realized what was happening that Don could not catch him and so Q Ball beat Don for the Deep South Championship.

Sadly, not long after that, Q Balls chute failed to open in another race in Baton Rouge and he died tragically.

All the time.

When I got back from Vietnam some 50 odd years ago I was having some major problems. One of the recommendations I got back then was to start a journal, a diary of sorts, of my day to day thoughts and activities. I've maintained that all these years.

Some years ago I digitized it so I can search it - type in certain keywords and I can look up events from way back when. One of the things I've learned from this is just how unreliable memories of an event can be after many years. But it sure is neat to be able to read some of those entries now - so much I'd forgotten about completely!

My mother kept all my letters I wrote while in the Navy, some of the bootcamp ones were hilarious. And she made albums from the pictures I chose to send. Sometimes the wife and I will break out that stuff on a weekend.

All the time ...... It's a viable backup to my failing memory.

Did that recently with Google Earth to look at where we've lived and some places I've visited on travels while working. Can get it easily online now without having to install it.

I look up places on Google street view too. But my favorite is to lie in bed a goodle Obits. Tough that women (the good ones) change their names.
