They're always high, I don't know how they stay in business. I agree about not wanting to target practice. As I mentioned earlier I thought after the last shortage I had stocked up. Yet I'm now down to <500 rounds, besides what is my trucks and various other places. I haven't fired a round this year and am going through withdrawal.
Thankfully a friend gave me some wad cutters he'd loaded, so I will at least be able t burn some powder soon.

I cannot recommend reloading too highly. I'll admit that my natural hoarding tendencies and my Saturday mornings addiction to moving sales have helped me avoid the current price panic. A pound of powder gives me about 1,400 rounds of 45 auto. My bullets are cast from lead I scrounge for free. Primers are scarce right now and they will be a concern if the panic persists through this year. But right now my 45 auto shooting costs me about 3 cents per round. Yes, reloading takes time but it's time I enjoy. And I also load .38 special wadcutters that I enjoy, and light loads for my .44 magnum which I also enjoy. Republican women around here seem to all carry very light .38 revolvers, and I have given many of them boxes of light loads which they really like shooting. They give me back the empties.

Benelli owns stoeger and makes there shotguns for a lot less money , same action. Model 3000. I have one of their 3 gun models , great gun .

A .44 Magnum if you handload is quite a versatile firearm.
200 grain .44 Special load for personal defense.
200 grain HP .44 Special deer round.
129 grain muzzle loading ball for rabbits and grouse. Squirrels hate them too.
Bird shot round #6 I believe. You have to be close.
240 grain hard cast for black bears.
300 grain hard cast for brown bears and moose.
300 grain soft point for brown bears and moose.

One thing I have learned about self-defense firearm is the wife’s involvement. If she isn’t involved, then the firearm becomes your choice. If your wife is involved and wants to participate, then the choice needs to be what she is comfortable with. You both need to be comfortable and able to use it.

About 9 years ago, my wife decided she needed a gun of her own for things that might go bump in the night. I was traveling a lot at the time.

I had a 9mm close at hand. She tried it and hated it. We tried several other types of guns, none of which she liked.

Turns out, she is a natural with a 4” DA revolver in .38/.357. So we migrated to that platform since she is so comfortable with that specific combination. She chose the gun/caliber, I feel comfortable with het choice.
