Y'all Been Checkin' Lumber Prices?

I really doubt anything is going back to what many of us think is normal. It will be the new normal and it will change often.

They may not go all the way back down to pre-covid prices, but I’m guessing these inflated prices can only hold up as long as the building / remodeling boom is going on.

This is me without the jealousy. I'm not into working 6-7 days / week to get a business profitable while trying find skilled workers. I can do some work around the house and realize when I have to hire someone.

You and me both.

I’ve done my thing and am now in phase 2.

I have a very nice couch.

Funny, my wife and i had this discussion many years ago and it went almost exactly like your Amish fellow, except it was us asking each other the same questions. We decided to go with a smallish house and try not to be working just to pay for a house payment.
My wife and I had 8 biological kids together and had I job security coming out of college I would eventually bought a 2000 ft2 house on >10 acres of land then put a mobile home on the back side for the kids so when the kids left the house I could sell the mobile home.

I've always been amazed at people buying +3000 ft2 homes that only have 2-3 kids. :ROFLMAO:

Jealously and envy have always been with humans.

Not everyone is smart enough or able to take risks to make money. Most want someone to employ them and pay them so they can go home to relax.

Others build a business at 100% personal risk, work 24/7 and fail. Start again. Become successful and make great money.

Those relaxing on the couch then get jealous and complain about excess.

Folks need to read Adam Smith and learn a few things about free enterprise.

To that point, so have greed and excess. You can't tell me that everyone with 19,000 sqft houses and private jets worked their behinds off for 30 years to get there. I would venture a guess that the majority of those folks are not self made.

These big expensive houses have big tax bills too. One couple I know has a huge house on 50 acres (field rented to farmer) and the property tax bill is $25k every year. That helps pay for services like schools, fire station, roads, and police.

Does it matter? They won the lottery. Their parents did the work. They became doctors or lawyers or highly successful financial folks.

Spending money is not greed

Looking at what others have and complaining about excess is petty.

Be happy with what you have and enjoy life.

Agree, spending money is not greed. Spending money is good for everyone!

Dramatically over-consuming finite resources in direct conflict with the climate stability of the planet, however, is greed.

Getting back to the thread topic: building a house with this much raw lumber has a very real impact on the demand and thus prices for everyone else.

When you have to overly generalize to make a point...it's not really a point or a good one.

Wood is a renewable resource...

If the climate is such a big deal for you, you should buy a lot 2x4's and store them for eternity so that you can save the planet buy doing carbon storage. If that wood is left to rot or burn, it's releasing carbon, which I now hear is bad.

Or let's just let people save the planet by employing a bunch a trades and making their home a carbon storage memorial.

Or - don’t drive a car. Walk or bike.

Don’t fly in a plane. Walk or bike.

Don’t use gas powered equipment to mow or take care of the lawn. Push mowers are still available.

Don’t eat beef as cows fart.

Most always point to others as offenders but rarely do anything themselves. What they do is reasonable and conservative. What others do is excess.
