So I just inherited a 1991 John Deere LX178 and need help identifying what the red thing is between the hoses? It has wires that are not connected and I need to figure out where those wires need to connect to tractor, but I don't know if that is a water pump or what?

Appreciate your help in advance.

John

Here are some more pictures...could be a coolant heater? Why though? If so can it just be removed?

Yes...that is unless you live someplace really cold and use the tractor thru the winter and it needs some heat to start. If removing I would replace hose end to end with new appropriately sized hose clamps

It is a Kat's lower radiator hose coolant heater. On the end of the bare wires would normally have a electrical plug to plug into a outlet for winter starting.
