JD 1600 WAM
JD1600, the brake must be applied to crank it. When I let off the brake pedal, it goes dead. It will run as long as I hold the brake pedal depressed. This primarily happens once the machine is warmed up. Any ideas what causes this?

Do not know, but sounds like the PTO is on.. so won't keep running once brake is released.

This symptom would occur if there was nobody sitting on the seat. So...
Firstly check your seat switch.

(Beenthere: The machine wouldn't start initially if the PTO switch was engaged?)

The PTO switch must be off (depressed) before the engine will crank. So with the brake pedal depressed and the PTO in off position...I crank the engine and when I let off the brake it goes dead. I will try replacing the brake limit switch first and report back.

start with the seat switch
if the brake switch was involved it would probably either keep running or not start at all

Your logic is flawed and you are already telling us the Brake switch is functional as there is a change in engine RPM when you release the brake - From running to zero.

The Brake switch is therefore operative.

If you are sitting on the seat and then release the brake the engine should continue to run. (Yes?) Thus the machine is not recognising the presence of a bum on the seat.

Again - Check ... the ... seat ... switch.

Seat switch is by-passed. All functions properly until it doesn't. Ha. Mowing along it just shuts off. It is electrical. Its like turning the switch off. The engine runs fine. Its not starving for fuel and gradually shutting down. It immediately shuts off...as I said like turning off the ignition switch. One weird thing I have noticed....once the engine stops, I disengage the PTO switch, mash the brake and it cranks. When I engage the pto switch, the mower decks will not start (even though they are all the way down...same position that i just mowing in) until i mash the "down" button for each deck. Its like I am having to tell the control board that the decks are down.
