Didn't the South Shore get some funds to double track a stretch of the route?

I rode the SS a couple of times with my parents many years ago to go to Museum of Science and Industry and the Field Museum.

I flew into Meigs Field a few times too. The Aquarium is right there, and a few good restaurants were close too.
Then that bastard Daley shut it down and tore out the runway. I'm still pissed about that.

Most of it is double track from Chicago to just east of Gary. They want to double track it from Gary to Michigan City to improve travel time. It will remain single track from Michigan City to South Bend.

Small problem, though. The experts estimated the cost of the project and the bids came in 75% higher than the estimates. So back to the drawing board.

As for Meigs field, yikes! Bulldozed at midnight illegally. Wow.

I knew several people that died after taking off from Meigs Field. One crashed in Lake Michigan trying to fly under the scud VS waiting for an instrument flight plan. They went too low and hit the water. Sad thing was, when they found the wreckage, the door was open and the life preservers were missing. They survived the crash, but died of hypothermia, from what I remember. The bodies washed up on the shores weeks later.

Crazy that he bulldozed the runway in one night, in violation of FAA rules.

Makes you wonder about the 100’s of billions, if not trillions, in cost over runs that will be paid on transportation/infrastructure projects you hear being proposed.
