I'm helping out a friend with a Yanmar 1510D that needs lots of 4wd parts related to the knuckles and gears on both sides up front. The bolts holding the axle housings together on both sides loosened and/or broke and one of the wheel bearings failed and sent ball bearings into the gears on the left side. The right side also has considerable damage to gears, spacers, etc. (probably as a result of the other side failing). I was on it when it happened (I was volunteering for her non-profit organization by doing some mowing) and it nearly ripped my thumb off when the wheels and steering wheel violently turned to the left. I've checked with Hoye and they can't help (other than bearings and similar, but no gears). Please let me know if you have parts. If not, she might be parting this one out or converting to 2wd if there is a way to do it safely (or maybe try to rehab the gears at a machine shop). Thank you.

I think I'd gut the front end and make it 2wd... then start shopping for parts (or a parts tractor).... likely just buy a whole front end

I too would agree. Either make it a 2WD or find a parts machine with a good front end. The Left coast has more Gray Yanmars than the rest of the country, so the chances are better getting parts.

On the Yanmar Tractor Owners Group, we have the Parts Manuals for the machine and others. You can download a few and compare what models use the same front end to assist in getting either 4WD parts or a 2WD setup.

See my link in the signature next to the US flag.

If all else fails, there are lots of companies that make custom gears, and with modern machining technology it has gotten lots cheaper for a one (two) off. But it won't be used part cheap.

All the best,

Peter

Thank you both for your quick replies and insight. I joined the Yanmar Tractor Owners Group which seems to be another great resource. This experience encouraged me to check bolt tightness on my F18D more regularly, which is good practice for everyone with a tractor. Cheers!

Just saw your response Peter, and thank you, I'll look into that as well.

Yes, and Welcome. :)

Free YM1510 Parts Manual is available.

We don't have a F18 manual yet. Still searching and asking around.
It would look something like this in PDF

Just a comment - while the US YM186D shares a lot of parts, I've read that the front axle is different.

So verify thoroughly, if that is what you are offered as repair parts.

That is correct. The 1510D front axle is unique so, if the parts came off of anything else, they will not work.

Aaron, do you suppose YM186D is supplied with a loader-spec (heavier) front axle?

And, are the tire sizes and therefor the internal gear ratios, identical between 1510D and 186D? I wonder if entire front axle assemblies can be substituted.
