Maximum bucket size for L48?

When I was considering a new L47, the dealer told me they normally put an 18' or 24" backhoe bucket on. I have seen trenching buckets as skinny as 9", with all sorts of reports about the material sticking in the thin versions. The dealer told me it could actually take a 36" bucket.

What is the maximum bucket size this machine could really handle?

Depends on the type of material being moved.
My L48 has a 24" bucket, but in my very light sandy soil, I suspect it might be able to handle a 36" bucket.

I would define mine as a "trenching" bucket, not a ditching bucket. Can you send me a pic of what you have? I did in sandy soils mostly, FL and GA. Some hardpan here and there. The 18" bucket tears it all apart pretty well. But would not mind a bit more. I guess the calculation is maximum lift fully entended to side, minus bucket weight.

Sorry, but I lack the technical expertise (80) to send pictures on TBN (I actually can do E-Bay pix though).
I have no problem with swinging/lifting a full bucket of sand, but my sand is also mostly dry.
Very frustrating, because holes often cave in readily.
I originally thought I wanted an 18" bucket, but the 24" is probably better for me.

I hit the water table here in FL at about 6' as an average. In GA about 8-9'. Oh yes, dry versus wet is a biggie. Do you have the pin or quick attach?

My stuff is pinned. My thumb is mechanical. Not nearly as cool as a real thumb. If I were doing demo every day, I would invest in a true thumb.

I likely would not have spent the cash for a hydraulic thumb, but my 251 hour machine came to me with a hyd. thumb already installed.
It is very nice!
