Spilled diesel fuel, need help

Spilled a gallon of diesel, it went under the tractor on the floor in my shop. How is best way to clean up, or how long would it take to dry.

Oil dry, aka kitty litter.

Kitty litter and a broom or sawdust if you have it. It takes forever to dry, so you need to get it up

Floor dry, of saw dust. Sweep it up and put into a paper bag. Throw the bag and contents into the wood stove. Burn it when there is a chill in the air. (like today ;-)

Put down another light coat of floor dry or saw dust and just leave it sit on the spot for a day or two to pull up the residue. Or. spray the area with brake cleaner. and dry it up.

Pressure washer and ZEP Purple don't work bad either.

Was mixing vegetation killer with diesel, had small spill, butane torch wouldn't light it. Placed paper towel on it and it burned like a wick in a kerosene heater. I'm stocked up on oil dry now.

Clear the area of anything flamable, and grab one of these: Propane Torch

Super handy for cleaning up oil/gas.

Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham/Leeds Alabama shocked the Dawn guys when they called asking about ordering in bulk. Seriously, they found Dawn was the best thing for cleaning oil spills on the track.

I used basic H for when I changed oil in my
truck would take the pan of drain oil in the yard
with a bottle of basic H and the garden hose
started spraying water and adding a little basic H
and no oil when the pan was empty you could
run your hand over the area and not get a drop
of oil on your hand so never had a problem of
what to do with waste oil.

Throw some kind of absorbent on it. Sawdust is about the best. Gas would dry pretty quick in its own but diesel won’t.

I agree. Diesel is just a petroleum-based oil and Dawn (like any detergent, not soap) is a fine degreaser.

Once you've removed most of the diesel with pig mats, oil dri, kitty litter, or whatever, grab what the wife uses to do dishes with and you be fine.

Sounds stupid, but I often use a torch to burn off a bit of diesel on concrete. Blows my mind how engine fuel is so inflammable. Wouldn't do that for gas though.

I’ve done that for a small spill but a gallon is too much.

Another tip for sawdust.
Moistened sawdust is great to sweep plaster dust as well as most dusty shop floors.
Works as well as 'dustbane', (commercial sweeper dust control).

I've used a mix of sawdust and shavings from my planer. Clean the last bit with paper towels.

Put it all in a paper shopping bag - burned in my burn barrel.

Had to clean up about a quart from my shop floor. It was diesel.
