SH74 Alamo flail, bought it well used about 5yrs ago.

Noticed today the mower is extremely noisy, definitely a bearing type noise it sounds like. Haven’t investigated further, but I’m expecting that’s what I’ll find if I had to guess.

How hard of a job is replacing the bearings in the main rotor on these? Anything else I should be checking for?

I’m assuming it’s worth rebuilding this as it cuts great and was quiet and smooth until today.

I did one years ago and other than everything being rather heavy I dont recall it being a big deal. I do recall the bearing was darn pricey but that is not a shock when you are working on commercial grade mowers.

I have replaced many Alamo flail bearings. Usualy they needed to be cut appart and the inner bearing race cut off the shaft. If you didnt beat the snot out of it like these where it may not need to be cut off.

Montage is another good source along with flailmaste.

I just bought the bearing with the housing for non-drive side and it was $185.00.

It’s supp to be here tomorrow and I plan to do it on Saturday.

The manual says to support the cutter shaft and use a tool to push the bearing back off the shaft.
Here is a section of the Alamo manual on the bearing removal and another on vibration.

You can see that two of the holes are threaded to allow for pushing the housing and bearing off the cutter shaft.

The threaded holes are 7/16" x 20 (NF) Thread and the set screw takes a 3/16" allen wrench.

It was really very easy job even without having any 7/16" x 20 (NF) to push it out.

I think if there is a next time I may try buying just the bearing as it is quite a bit less money.
