oak leaves are rich in tannins. ... The other trouble with oak leaves is that they are really flat, s
Had a huge black oak topple a few years ago. Lots of firewood but lots of small stuff to chip as well. I was advised to *not* use the wood chips in planters since it is too acidic ... so I put those on walkways instead.

I noticed the compacting of the flat oak leaves in areas where I dump them out of the Cyclone rake. The piles sit there for years without any noticeable change. So based on your good insight and suggestion I think I need to plow through those piles or break them up and turn them over.

A little urea or ammonium sulfate sprayed on would go along way.

24 trees down would generate...wow, an enormous amount of slash. I'm surprised that you haven't moved up to a 1000HP Vermeer chipper.;)

Just that one more tool...

All the best,

Peter

From the first post I thought how many people would love plowhogs litter for compost. Now you post a machine grinding trees many would use for poles and posts. If those are cedar as they appear to be,I could actually sell them around here.
Saaayy, how bout we barter? I'll trade you 10 mounds of Fire Ants and 3 wild pigs for a Redwood sawlog and 2 freshly caught trout. I hope Eddiewalker doesn't show up to raise a sack of cocklebur and 3 horse apples before I make a deal.

No such luck. The 1800 trees were Scotch Pine and Blue Spruce. The Pines were dying and the spruce had needlecast. I did save as many as I could and the critters like the layout.

By any chance were dead trees the result of insects? I've seen areas in NM and CO where thousands of acres of pine killed by diseases spread by beetles.

It could be as I never checked and it didn't matter....they were gone. I do have some nice white and norway spruce and fraser fir.

I have a few hundred dead ash from 40-100' tall if anyone is looking for some firewood. I can't cut and split fast enough to get the piles of rounds to reduce in size.

I'm still learning the art of composting, but at least I have readily available water.

As somebody said, most of solutions here are mostly making a big pile of whole leaves into a big pile of small leaf fragments.

I have no answers, just sharing two things I did to help manage leaves since I hate managing leaves.

1. I bought a BillyGoat blower, they come in sizes up to 18HP, and you can get a bigger blower (another brand) that runs off your pto and looks like a jet engine.
So that's how I can move them a long ways on any terrain.
2. I bought a "light materials" bucket. My normal bucket is only 9 cubic feet. Nothing. I bought at 35+ cu ft. bucket. Think of it as my 750 pound tarp. I can put branches, leaves, or anything else in there in reasonable volume and cart it off.

It's all a grand experiment so far, just sharing. Can't say how well it works long term.

Good luck!
