Control Valve rebuild on John Deere 2030 with a #48 Deere Loader. Knew air would be in system so cycled through the three point lift for about 5-10 minutes.

It would chattered in the lift cycle and seemed not improving much. Tried Loader and barely moved. Was beginning to think it must be something else in the system that failed. But realized this HAD to be the problem. I continued to cycle the three point for approximate 15 minutes more and tried the loader again. It worked. So if working on hydraulic, replacing valves or hose it may while take while to get the air out of the system. Deere does not have a bleeder valve on my equipment.

Regards. Gil

Do you understand how the closed center hyd system operates on your JD 2020?? How long since hyd reservoir screen has been checked/cleaned?
I don't understand how air could possibly get in tractors main hyd system just by rebuilding FEL control valve. Yes repaired FEL control valve circuit will have air in it but that air upon cycling FEL cylinders would be sent directly to trans case(hyd reservoir) not to the frt pump. You're correct JD doesn't offer a hyd bleeder valve nor is a bleeder valve needed.

2020 hyd chattering is probably caused from frt hyd pump have low supply of oil or stroke control valve not operating as designed BUT probably not caused by air in hyd system from rebuilding FEL control valve.

Generaly hydraulics are self bleeding especially open center systems as there always flowing fluid even when a control valve is not activated. More than likely you got air in the cylinders and this you will need to cycle the cylinder to get the air out.

Sorry missed reporting some important points in previous post. Also replaced some hoses and fitting. Checked fluid level and it was low. (proper check requires checking oil level with tractor RUNNING at fast idle. Had been checking when engine off.) It required almost two gallons to top off. Yes, know of the screen and it was removed and cleaned. Purchased this tractor used in 1997 and as with old tractors things wear out or break. Over the years I have rebuilt a lot of the major systems. The last few years it's the hydraulic system, new pump, hoses, connections. Hopefully pretty much the entire hydraulic system. Couple years ago in was the cooling system, water pump, radiator, etc. Electrical and ignition system was also a few years ago. Which I converted to an electronic system.

You've had that tractor a long time now and I know from articles on TBN that you have done a lot of work on it. It wasn't new when you got it, right?

I've always been in favor of fixing up older tractors - particularly those from the 1960s through 90s that were basically built to be rebuilt over and over.

But the world has changed and things are different now, and I'm curious how you would rate buying used & fixing things up versus buying brand new.

To me it's a huge trade off. The new tractors have so many things that make life easier but the other side of the coin is the old tractors can be worked on. I probably wouldn't go back to old tractors but that's just me not wanting to work on tractors anymore.

It's a 1973 Gas model. By serial number determined it's among the LAST gas model farm tractor manufactured by John Deere. 1973 was the last year John Deere manufactured gas model farm tractors. May have a Collector model. :) Agreed about old pre 2000 at least you can work on them. Have local farmer friends who are complaining that the days of them working on their tractors are gone. Specially it being proprietary computer system, and dealer has to do ALL or practically all work on them. No more wrench and screwdriver shade tree mechanical work at home.
