Dialects, got to love them

I have a coworker that is Chinese and durn near impossible to understand. It is like a third language - not English, not Chinese but the 2 cut together. For example we have another coworker named Garth. When this person refers to him it sounds exactly like Gus. It takes everyone a while to figure out the translation that gus=garth... Just one example, there are many. it is entertaining watching the new people for a while. :ROFLMAO:

Aussies are infamous for dropping an 'r' in their pronunciations; Cairns is pronounced 'Cans'. (Not to be confused with the film festival place 'Cannes') Anyway...

I was having my motorcycle worked on whilst I was at work and went to their Showroom to pay for it. It turned out that their workshop was a few 'doors' down the road at the "ca-pa". The what? The "ca-pa".

Oh, the car park. <I still chuckle about that>

And many of us here that don't watch Aussie TV don't know what a car park is either :)

What else is it called James?
Around here, we have the parking lot, like at a supermarket, or a park and ride for car poolers who share a ride into the cities.

Somebody.....Churchill? said....

2 nations, separated by the same language.

2 words you won't hear anyplace else

1. Bubbler.....that's a public drinking fountain on a street corner in Milwaukee Wi. They took them out years ago but try asking someone from N. Dakota, where's the bubbler?

2. Spendy....most everyone I know says...pricey. I was on a long flight from Italy and i overheard the guy behind me said...spendy. I turned around and asked, are you from Portland or Seattle.

Seattle

And not really dialect, but words and their meanings - some years ago I was with a group of folk from USA travelling through a country town here when they spotted a sign on a business "Smash Repairs". What's that, they asked?

Turns out they only knew of these businesses as a panel shop, or an auto body shop.

And then there's a shifter = crescent wrench, and lots of people here keep a torch in their glovebox...

You don't go around in the USA asking others if they have a fag and if they love spotted dick ;)

I have worked with so many people that have accents I am pretty good at understanding them all. Ironically probably the hardest for me is Louisiana deep swamp stuff….but my wife understands it perfectly! She lived there 8 years when she was younger.
