I need to do some weed control in the horse pasture in August before seeding in Rye for the winter in central NC. Got a 40 gal boom sprayer for 8 acre pasture.

Im guessing a 2-4-D type product, just not sure what to get and how much. Tractor supply, Amazon, southern states etc are all the vendors I use for farm stuff.

Any suggestions?

If you mentioned what are you trying to control, and why, it might help.

A broadleaf herbicide is one way, (but which weed would definitely influence which herbicide!) intense grazing by another species, e.g. cows, goats is another. (Intense grazing and trampling favor grasses)

All the best,

Peter

For broadleaf weeds, (post emergent) I use Trimec or Amine. For grassy weeks (crabgrass & dallas grass) I use MSMA+. If MSMA is not available to you, use a product with Quinclorac as the active ingredient. The higher the % the better.

It'll take 4-10 days to have a noticeable effect, so don't worry if you don't see any change in weed color in the first 24 hours.

You can prevent most weeds by putting down a heavy dose of pre-emergent in Feb, with a lighter dose mid season. Then another good dose in Oct-Nov to prevent the winter weeds.

Here are a couple of on line places I use. Seem to have good pricing and quick ship, depending on chemical needed.

The only way to get a good recommendation is to contact your local county agent.

2,4-D products work on most broadleaf weeds, but most of them are Restricted use products, which means you must be licensed to purchase. And there are some restrictions on when you can plant after an application. You many need to wait 6 weeks or more.

MSMA is also restricted and is not labeled for use in pastures. In fact, there are very few places that MSMA can be used at all.

And, some products have different restrictions for horse pastures.

Please read, understand, and follow the label on any products you use.

Your county agent will be familiar with your weeds and should be able to easily make a recommendation that will be legal and effective.

What Complete T.C. said and I might add Crabgrass and Dallis Grass are good grazing so I'd count my blessings and leave them be.

I just have general broad leaf weeds, I don’t mind the crabgrass in the pasture.

I’ll try to call the county agent tomorrow and see what they say.

You need to identify what weeds you need to get rid of before you spray.

Staff If you are in Wake county, try contacting Jeana Myers - if she doesn't know, she should put you in contact to someone that does know...

One used a lot is 2,4D, but it can easily be vaporized and can condense several miles away and kill someone's shrubs or vegetables. Other stuff like Grazon can live on almost forever through the digestive track of animals and show up as toxic manure and compost.

Identify what you want to kill and follow the label closely.

I have had good success with weed management using pasture pro from TSC. Basically it is just 2,4-D but takes care of the plants I target and leaves the grasses alone. My biggest nemesis is lambsquarter, knapweed and milkweed but leaves the brome and orchard grass alone. If you have any alfalfa in the field though it would probably zap it.

I use it sometimes on my hayfields as well just because it really helps me get a cleaner crop right after first cut because it helps me get a cleaner second cutting.
