First full meal off the homestead

I remember when I planted onions one year. By the end of the season, they were barely any larger then when I planted them (I have heavy clay soil). I could have bought 2 50# sacks of onions for less than what I had into those onion sets.

My wifes ears of corn cost about $35 each. And this spring she wanted me to build cedar raised gardens. I put my foot down when the lot would have neared $2,000 at todays prices. Hell, corn is $.35 per ear at super 1. Get real

I look at that in the grocery store and often it's almost as dry as the ornamental corn people hang out for Thanksgiving. The new "Supersweet" corn is better, but most corns starts turning to starch as soon as you pick it. If you want to taste fresh corn you need to put the water on to boil, then go out back to pick a few ears.

Not so. I just bought 6 ears at the store, then picked one off the stalk. I boiled 1 store bought and one stalk ear, both for same time in different pots. I could not tell the difference.

all im saying....

Stores around here have had really crappy fruit and veggies here for the last 6-7 months, think it's transportation constraints slowing down delivery? We're off the beaten path so used to the "not best" but it's been especially bad this year.

Sometimes we can buy decent corn but not this year. The last time I bought it I ended up feeding it to the chickens; rather expensive way to feed them when cracked corn is 11$/bag.

Come to think of it they wouldn’t eat it, either.

I grew up in a family that had large gardens and we raised a bit of livestock. I will never do that again.
I agree as far as livestock goes, seems to be more trouble/expense than it's worth. I do enjoy a vegetable garden though.

I've never been able to grow onions either. Lots of foliage, but almost no bulb. I'm thinking there's something about the soil here they don't like.

Corn here is not growing well this year. Even folks with a lot of experience are not dong very well.
We're planning to be away end of Aug/early Sept just about the time corn is ripe here so I didn't plant any this year. From what I've seen of others', at least the stalks look good.
My tomatoes this year are pathetic. They like hot weather, and this summer has been cool & rainy. Rest of the garden seems to be doing well.
GRS, what is your wife doing that costs so much? I buy a package of seeds and plant them, that's it. Well that and chase the crows away until they sprout...

I can buy a dozen eggs for about $1. I don't think I could compete with that, if I had chickens. I see a lot of backyard chickens around here and speculate that that could be one reason the prices are remaining low.

I give mine away. I don't know how to set a price for good will though. There's at least 7 other people in town raising them, with a population of >200.
