Families that lose their home in a storm or fire depend on friends or family for housing. It may be the Florida condo falling, a CA wildfire, or a WI tornado that causes the lose of a home. Thank goodness that there are those that will open their doors to people in need. We don't know if this man was really in need or not but, one thing was sure....he was FREE.

Does anyone this this forum above the age of 18(not living with their parents) live somewhere without having a written agreement, rental, lease, mortgage, etc?
My brother's girlfriend. It is a hassle when things go sour and she refuses to move out. This is his fourth one and he has had problems with the first three. Some people never learn.

After retiring and forefilling my bucket list,I went ice fishing in Mn. I noticed a man entering a small building and remaining for extended periods. My guide/host who own's property on the lake explained the man was entering an underground dwelling beneath the building which is on land surrounding the nice Summer home which guy owns. Told me the house was locked up and laid up for winter and guy's wife was in Fl for the winter. Guy loves solitude and trapping so he come's for weeks at a time, fly's to Fl for a while then returns to trap. Meddlers stired the pot from time to time so guy turns it over to his lawyer and carry's on as usual.

1. The owner has no written or verbal agreement with the guy and had no idea he was there. Nobody but Dave says there was an agreement.
2. The land is in forestry zoning and habitants are not permitted.
3. How long would you be allowed to dump sewer along a river.
4. He's lying saying it was only a hunting cabin. The video I saw showed a tv, he clearly is living there.

Sorry, he seems like a good guy but move along. Hopefully someone will allow him to move on their land.

Kids and siblings have had no contact for years with this guy.

Agreed... This may be hard to believe, but just 10 years ago before we moved to VA, we went and looked at a gorgeous South Carolina ante bellum mansion for sale in Bennetsville; huge, beautiful, 12 acres, and a guest house. Well, in the guest house lived an elderly black man who had lived there something like 55 years; he came with the sale as a "caretaker" and the understanding he could live there till he died as he had no relatives. We kept looking...

But he did have a contract. Verbal yes, but still recognized in a court of law. Now the original party past away and there is a new owner of the property. I think that does not make this man a squatter but rather a tenet. I believe if you buy a rental property you have to go through the eviction process to remove the tenet if you do not want to rent it out anymore.

Interesting. In NH verbal is legally binding, BUT both parties must get something from said contract. If not it is considered a gift. In this case did the homesteader give anything to the owner?

The landowner didn't even know that he was there.

Good point. He could be that the deal included he keep an eye on the place. We probably will never know.

The original owner that had the arrangement likely did know he was there. The new owners did not. Either way it is a sad situation for everyone involved.

The original owner died 20+ years ago. Any arrangement they had died with him. Mr Lidstone apparently made no attempt to contact his son. Furthermore, the hermit himself is now claiming that it was a hunting camp not a home.

This battle apparently started 6 years ago, and the landowner has stated he didn't want him there. Therefore, any agreement they may have had is now null and void.
