In many Europe's countries, Italy for sure, 1 year of service is required of all citizens. I think directly out of school they must do 1 year of some kind of govt service.

Most the guys i knew in italy went in the army.

I believe we should do that here, even for the senators son.

I'm not big on mandating anything, but do believe that we should encourage HS kids to do some type of public service which would get them out of their comfort zone.
I'm a bit biased though as one of my biggest regrets is that I did not join the military. It would have gotten me out of Maine for a while and given me a chance to see places and things which I never will. I came of age just after Vietnam though, in a short period when men didn't even need to register for the draft.

I am all for mandated service for those who get public assistance for college or whatever. Seems like a good way to find balance between the desire for free stuff and having to earn your way. Just like ROTC cadets or Academy graduates. You get public money, you pay it back in service. Give them a hybrid system. 13 weeks of the same boot camp experience as our GIs and 2 years of deployment to whatever rat holes we need bodies. Based on how much was given, any additional years go to OJT in a field tied more closely to their education. One of the biggest problems I have seen in employees, (clerical, technical, or professional) there are too many who do not appreciate how good they have it. Two years of a miserable government job will help them appreciate the two years doing something that they dreamed of...The biggest problem with this idea is that the rich kids would get out of it. Maybe it becomes a requirement for federal service at any level...want to be in Congress? Have to do 2 years of low level hard work first.

It's the politicians that send the military off to war, or police action, or <other ____ place>. I'm all for the requirement that a politician has to have served in the military before they can send the military anywhere, or better yet, have to have served in the military before becoming a politician.

I generally agree with you but what do you do to the ones who don't show up for their public service? Cut them off? You would be labeled a heartless meanie! 😂

Nothing new about that. I have carefully cultivated that my whole life.

Frankly, I would reinstate hard time. Breaking rocks or doing other physical labor would mean shorter sentences, but at least equal to service missed.

I'm the first to give someone a hand up, or to teach them a skill; that being said, if you have no interest in learning or working, or think you can skate by doing nothing, and taking what I generously contribute to the gubment, then I have no place for you in my world, or on the same planet. Quitters and takers are unnecessary baggage for the World.

Double edged; if it keeps them from stealing and destroying my stuff I'll pay to put em somewhere else!
