JD 820 3 cyl diesel fuel problem

I've never attempted to turn flywheel with a pry bar on a JD 300 series engine. Have you attempted this feat?
Only on my 420 gasser. 😜

When cranking the engine, it sounds even. Not like a cylinder has compression loss. If the knock was bad, would I be able to hear it from compression loss? I don't think it will knock unless it's running. How do you test compression on this engine?

To check compression one needs to remove all 3 injectors & install a compression test gauge separately in each injector bore. Rotate crankshaft & note pressure for each cylinder. Brg knock would be more pronounced if each cylinder was firing

I removed the oil pan, but I can't tell much because I can't rotate the engine with the IP off. I may put it back on. One thing is someone had it off before, and put it back on with a ton of silicone and no gasket. Makes me wonder why it was taken off.

You can remove main brg caps to visually inspect main brg inserts without the need to rotate crankshaft.

This sounding more and more like a parts tractor, not worth the cost of fixing. My guess is they gave up and sent it to auction.

I'm thinking the same thing, except it was an estate sale where the original owner was deceased. I think he was an invalid for a long time before he passed, that was why it sat so long, then got the attempt at running, then sat another 10 years. I say this because the break on the IP driveshaft was very old. They probably knew something was wrong when they heard that IP driveshaft break. If the engine is still ok, I'd be willing to keep going. I have a use for the tractor and loader, and anything this size with a loader doesn't come cheap here.

Since the main bearing caps are removable I would buy some Plastigauge ( Genuine Plastigauge - How It Works ) and check the main and conrod bearing clearances as well as visually inspect the bearing surfaces. If the surfaces look good and the clearances are within spec then I would risk spending the dough on the IP.

I agree if all 3 rod brgs pass a similar inspection/test.

OK, I was thinking consignment auction, where a lot of problems get "sent down the road"
