Being lactose intolerant it was funny going to my sandwich place, watching the guy butter my bread, look up at me, put the bread down and pick up a clean slice.
I could order coffee black or "american" and get it with milk or cream, so in some places I just gave up and ordered tea with lemon.
Back in the 80's you could not get good food at a typical restaurant, by the late 90's they had amazing restaurants everywhere.
I tried the pork pie once, a hockey puck with pork fat and a bit of meat, ready to pack in paper for off to war. It was the highest rated pie too.
And then there is Marmite- They used to use it like we use peanut butter. Now it is less visible, but back in the 80's you would never find a kitchen in the UK without. The Aussies had vegamite. My Aussie friends used to bring bottles with them.
