Recently read about the UK firing up just a bit more coal, as natgas has been spiking.

Other than hydro (one of the reasons I don't like seeing dams demolished), the problem with wind, solar, tidal, cow farts.... is they are transitory (fortunately on the last one !). Ergo, you need something to back up alt nrg.

While dumping costs on consumers and manufacturers seems de rigueur, some jurisdictions balk when it's their own skin in the game to keep the grid up.

i'm pretty sure it's the cows belching as apposed to the other

I live in the middle of coal country, never saw a mountain top removed. Strip mining only occurred where the coal seam was close to the surface. I’m sure there’s an instance somewhere, but in general, this is not true.
a comment was made a while back that burning wood is carbon net zero because the tree had been capturing carbon it's entire life, just releasing what it had been saving.

can't the same logic be applied to oil and coal. coal is dead plant matter that had been saving carbon all its life and oil is dinosaurs which are also carbon life forms.

i know nothing but my BS detector just went off.

a tree sequestering carbon for 50 years then releasing it all in a week of burning just doesn't seem to balance but....

i know nothing......

In the thread about the Big Boy, I thought it said they put the diesel electric there for the braking to save the brakes on the Big Boy, not so much because it was safer, but because the brakes on the Big Boy would be insanely expensive to replace.

The diesel may also be taking most of the load. The boilers are old and may be derated for much lower pressure. They may have the fire box minimally fired to just produce enough steam to the cylinders to get the stack smoke effect.
This is just a thought. No confirmation

Showing people what they can buy in 10 years in the way of an EV does not indicate any near-term plans for EVS in my book.

I've planted thousands of new trees. I don't think I've planted any new coal. ;)

Elon Musk estimates we need to DOUBLE the power generating and output capacity of the electrical grid in the US to support a near full transition to EVs. To me we need to tackle the power problem before we start requiring/recommending people move to EVs.

We have lots of clean power here in Québec that can be transported the US East coast if we're allowed ;)
