Head scratcher, one has to wonder without the early unions would there be(paid sick days, health care, paid vacation days, safe work environments, good pay for a good days work and so on) Pretty sure good old Henry ford and the coal mine owners could give two chits less about there employees. Are the unions perfect hell no but there are some real douche bags in management also.I been on both side of the fence to witness both.
look into westinghouse and how he treated his employees.

Why work for him then? That’s how a free market works.
Employee isn’t happy? Get a different job. You
Employer can’t get the type of employee they need? Pay more.
If a company is making too much another company is going to start and provide a similar product keeping the price and profit down.
It’s not that hard.
Trust me I would not work for his type.Made my own way my whole life without any freebies. Not that hard to get ones lazy a$$ of the couch and hit it hard some choose not to then complain why me.;)

Speaking of closed shops, did you know that the best men were sent to a new job first and they stayed to the end before going back to the union hall for another job. Guess who were the last to be hired onto a job and the first to be sent back to the hall...the know-it-alls that had more mouth than fortitude.
you mention union halls. funny, i was thinking about union halls yesterday and wonder if they still work that way.

growing up in blue collar milwaukee, seemed like everyone was in the union and i would hear the adult men talking about going to union hall to see if they were working that day....or not.

seems like a strange way to do business. i'm pretty sure the long shore men in portland oregon still go to union hall to see where they are going to work today.

neighbor lady was a long shore men and a binge drinker. she told me she only had to work 1 day in 30 to keep her seniority.

around portland, that was considered skilled work. i'm told it paid well.

you sounded like you might be interested in labor relations.

just nice to know there are a few real human beings out there.

if you are interested in labor relations, read a book about the Kohler co and the strike there.....it's in the text books.

No, what you are describing is inflation. If everyone's wages rise, no one is making any more money.
That statement is like the aphorism "a rising tide lifts all boats" .

That's fine if you have a boat. But for those standing in the swamp without flotation devices a rising tide may drown them.

In this modern economy there is another avenue. For those employers that have jobs that can be automated economically we will see another rush to automation. Workers will either have to train for new jobs or not work.

The factory of the future will have only two employees, a man and a dog. The man will be there to feed the dog. The dog will be there to keep the man from touching the equipment. (Warren Bennis, management consultant) linky
Looking at modern Japanese car factories and Tesla there are very few humans needed, tractors will probably be the same if human workers price themselves out of the market.

I suspect before too long we will have robots doing most labor jobs with all of the new technology. Then we will not have to worry about workers pay and working conditions.(y)

You are describing union corruption. I have witnessed this first hand. My father was a union man for 40 years.

He was a skilled hard worker and competent, but the local business agent didn't like him. I never learned why.

As he would get near the top of the board, waiting to be sent out on a job, some shuffling invariably went on. The BA's son (or friends) would always somehow luck out and get sent to a 1+ year job; my Dad would often get sent out on a job that lasted 1 day. After 1 day of work he went back to the bottom of the board to sit it out-- sometimes that wait stretched for months.

To provide for our family, he often had to pull a travel card and go work out of town where work was aplenty. Leaving our family behind-- sometimes for months.

When he retired, the union disallowed work he had accrued while using a travel card. Since he had traveled often needing to find work, it cut 9 years of service off his retirement pension.

If alive today, my Dad would defend the union. But as part of the family often left behind, I'm more than skeptical about their value. I've seen the seedy underbellly first hand.

Oddly enough, when I threw a retirement party for my Dad, the BA showed up and was all smiles ...
