I have a 94 Ford 1715 4wd that has been getting stuck in gear. It started grinding more than usual when shifting into second and reverse, then one day while pushing a brush pile it got jammed in gear and wouldn’t come out. When I removed the top trans cover it came right out.

Its done it a few more times and comes right out when I pop off the cover. Gears and everything look ok. The ball is kind of worn on the bottom of the shifter but I can’t see how that would cause it to jam.
Any insight would be appreciated.

Is the oil level where it’s supposed to be ?

My 8N started doing stuff like that and when I checked the oil it was way low so I filled it to the proper level and the problems disappeared, that was a few years ago and no problems since.

Yes the oil level is spot on. That was the very first thing I checked…

So after replacing the shift lever the problem seems to have resolved itself.
I took the lid off and ran through the gears with the old shifter that had a pretty worn ball.
1st and 3rd is engaged with the top shift lever and 2nd and R is engaged by the bottom. With the ball being worn, when I went from one shift rod to the other (from 1st or 3rd to 2nd or R, or vise versa) it wasn’t disengaging all the way then the rods would jam when I tried to select a gear.
The new lever seems to have solved the problem.

I had a 1949 Farmall Cub with exact same problem. The little ball on the end of the shift lever was worn off. So sometimes it did not align/engage the u shaped fork to move the transmission in and out of the gears. Replacing the shift lever fixed the problem. Glad yours was a simple fix.

I am having the same issue. I've discovered I need to replace the shift lever. Where did you find a replacement? Thanks.
