My smart phone has 1 million times the computing capacity of the Apollo 11 spacecraft; and if available in 1969 would have probably cost the same. You gotta think past TODAY. ;)
I am, and believe that I indicated that in my previous post. Things will need to change before it becomes the EV utopia which Musk et.al. envision.

I wish there was some way to wager on such things. I'd be willing to bet you a LOT it is not a fad.
It is a fad, just as 70k SUVs and lifted pickups for driving to the grocery store have been. Yet the money some are throwing at it now will support new ideas and (hopefuly) affordable solutions. Hopefully all of that magically free and readily available electricity will spill over into our homes.

I just believe that this is creating new and different problems for your descendants to deal with, just as we're seeing the results of prior generations excesses.

Agreed. But growing up in the 70's to now... WOW! No more huge record player, a wall full of albums, sending film AWAY to get developed, rotary dial phones... Jeez, do I need to go on?

One car I've had 45+ years is a '58 Nash Metropolitan. It gets 50 mpg and it was an inexpensive grocery getter. So while husband has the Cadillac, Lincoln or Imperial at work wife could get groceries, beauty parlor, etc. A tiny second car.
I think of EVs as that. Unplug, drive 20m to work, groceries, etc. An everyday use car that's inexpensive you plug in at home. A 200 mile range is plenty.
Especially big cities they would alleviate lots of pollution, noise, etc.
I don't like mandates (this is still USA?). Choices! What best serves the individual needs. EV, hybrid, gas, diesel, etc.
Some people live in a 900 sq. ft. home, others a 6K mansion. Do we want mandates on home sizes?

You're preaching to the choir. The difference is that I don't think anybody can snap their fingers and make it happen. OTOH it was a rather convenient bit of timing for the "traditional" manufacturers to suddenly not be able to get what they need to sell vehicles...

I would like something on that idea as well. Today I drove 50 miles one way for a 5 minute vet appointment... the roads were covered with salt and it would have been nice to leave my Colorado parked in the garage. Plus I would have bought 2 gallons of gas rather than 4.

I wonder how much carrying my generator would affect range? That is the biggest issue which people here and elsewhere ignore and a question I've never gotten an answer to; what happens when you get out of work and there's 8 inches of snow on the ground which wasn't there in the morning? Does that affect range? Especially in my case, when I load the snowsled back up and drive 25 miles of unplowed roads before hitting the tar.

I was thinking about this thread as I read about that. Also... I was 70 miles from home on Monday and had driven about 120 miles when I stopped for gas... only to find a widespread power outage. No big deal, I try not to let my tank get below 1/2, but it would have been different if I'd needed to plug in. I don't care what I drive as long as it gets me from point "A" to point "B"... yet even at 8$/gallon
the $60K difference between what I drive and what a 4wd EV truck would cost can buy a LOT of gas.

Not that either is available right now...

Once the EV fad wears off it will be interesting to see what the US fleet is driving.
I finally gave up living s life controlled by fear of the unknown and joined the EV Revolution but only after it was a 100% sure thing.

However I have no plan to give up my 220K mile 2010 5.4L F-150 with the 4WD towing package.

With all due respect I'm not necessarily "in fear of the unknown." What I am afraid of is getting stranded 10 miles from the nearest public road and farther from the nearest person on a winter day. I would prefer to at least see that acknowledged before I trade my gas pickup for a different source of pollution... even if we are passing our problems on to another nation.
