Tractor
Kubota L4330 with LA853 Loader, Yanmar YM276D with YFL1000 Loader, Yanmar YM276D, Yanmar YM147D, Case 1845C
One of the neighbors has noticed the tractors being used in the past and wants to "borrow one of those old red tractors" for the spring and part of the summer. I am disinclined to lend him a Yanmar and was surprised he asked. Would any of you ever lend out one of your Yanmar tractors?

If your neighbor is a friend,, that's a good way to lose a friend.
If your neighbor is not a friend, he has a monsterous set of cajones.

Who pays for break downs ? Borrow or rent ? Presumable, you have the Yanmar's to use them. What will you do without the one he borrows.

Best tell him you have projects for your Yanmar, and cannot accomodate him.

If those were his words "one of those old red tractors" would disincline me as well, and if he didn't ask if he could rent it, then no.

I think it's reasonable to rent a unit around market rates, as long as you know the context of the planned use, and the condition is the same when returned, and understanding he is responsible for any damage and repair.

Say it isn't so. No no no no.

Tell him it's like the potato chip commercial, 'get your own bag'. :)

Now, with that said, I have lent out my box blade and 3PT post hole auger. I will not lend out the brush mower.

Now, once you have the 2nd YM276 working, you 'could' reconsider renting it to them.

The neighbor is not a friend, and before being outside at the farm today, I had never spoken to him. In the last few years, he has waived a few times when slowing down to get to his land.

The newly acquired YM276D sits in upstate New York until pickup can be arranged, so he hasn't seen it. I looked up some of the rental companies in the area. One will deliver and pick up a tool/tractor for free if you rent it for a month or longer. I plan to give him that information.

Absolutely not

Never

I did that once and I got my tractor back with a ruined clutch.

I don't know that this is brand-specific. No Yanmar dealers around here. I cannot imagine a situation where I would let a neighbor borrow a tractor. I would be more likely to lend a hand, but operate my own equipment.

What does the Yanmar cost to replace? If somebody wants to borrow something, I say sure, just leave me the cash that it will cost to replace it, if something happens to it while you have it. So far, I'm 100% at never having anybody do this!!!

Wow. I am amazed at the sheer audacity of the request.

I wouldn't lend machinery. Ever. But especially not to someone who doesn't
a) know the brand
b) isn't articulating the project, and
c) clearly has no concept of the importance of tractors to owner who undoubtedly have projects or work to be done.
It just shows a complete lack of respect for others, their needs, and a total lack of respect for property. It really describes the sort of person that I would run, not walk, in the opposite direction from.

I don't think I would engage any further, if it were me. If he brings up again, I would just say "I have thought about and the answer is no." Or fib and say your insurance doesn't allow it (which it probably doesn't).

When my neighbors need help, I am there with tractor and tools, but I wouldn't let them operate the tractor; there are just too many ways that it could end badly for them, the tractor and me. How much better are you at operating your tractor today than when you first ran it? Personally, there have always been learning curves for me and new tractors.

All the best,

Peter

If it uses fuel or electricity it don't get loaned out around here. I don't really loan much anyway. I have absolutely loved having no visitors lately.

Spring and part of summer, sounds like he needs to buy a tractor or go rent one somewhere. You don't loan without being on it for a small quick job.

If a tool has more than two moving parts or a value over $50 I don’t loan it.

Now, last year my tractor logged more hours off my property than on it. I do a lot for neighbors, some in trade some in goodwill/just being a neighbor.

Loan, no

Rent, give him a price he has to refuse.
