Everybody I talk to says "it's out of control, people are paying stupid prices for _______"

I wonder if spending habits have changed yet due to price increases? If they change, that could be the real concern.

Personally I'm not going to buy an expensive new car for above list price when my paid off 2007 with 116k miles is doing the job fine and I need that car payment money to pay for everything else that has skyrocketed in price. Same goes for a lot of discretionary stuff for me.

If inflation continues, I'll continue to cut costs where I can to keep the bills paid and I'll work harder to earn more for any luxuries if I want them.

That, my friends is the true American way. That's what got our grandparents through the vagaries of the first half of the LAST century, which was pret' near screwed up as this one. Maybe more so - Spanish flu, WW1, Tulsa massacre, 1929 crash, depression, rise of Naziism and facism, WW2, polio, rise of communism, Korean War.
Wait... Whaaat??? :unsure:o_O:LOL::cry:

I blame current policies of printing money and spending like there is no tomorrow for the current inflationary prices of just about everything.
Think of this like a flood. When it rains upstream for 4 days, by the time it wipes out your house, it's your problem. Current isn't always now....

Sometimes floods happen unexpectedly, right under your feet, even while you’re upstairs sleeping, or at work, when you’re not home, too.

I have to own up to being the root of the problem:(

Years of low 1-2 point inflation, then I retired, second year on fixed (or broken) income, and my nest egg is worth ~10% less............

On the bright side, although I can't afford fuel or oil any more, we can still eat best choice until it goes up another 3% :)

Sorry for all the innocents I have hurt,

Some thoughts from an old timer & long retired....

Spending like there is no tomorrow only works if there really isn't any tomorrow.
Since so far there has always been a tomorrow, spending tomorrows funds today is rarely a good plan. It's not a bad plan either, the main danger is being trapped into a life of financial mediocrity.

Most people are unlikely to be able to pay off much debt on a fixed income. The system just doesn't work that way. So work while you can, or work for yourself.

Good financial times never seem to be so at the time.

Very few have ever lost money investing in land.

rScotty
And remember that tomorrow's "good old times" are happenng today.

Real property and land are two great long term investments. As we see now when inflation goes extra crazy, those assets are largely protected from inflation.

I had an engineer at an old job that bought silver rounds. Back then it was cheap at $8 for 1-oz. He would snag 24 every month. Silver futures for the past 56 years never fell below inflation, it stayed ahead. Today, silver is very attractive in price.

Needless to say, my engineer friend took the hit of that 10% loss cashing out his 401K. He said that by the end of the year, the market will take even more than the 10%. He was spot on. He took all the 401K from that employer fund and got more silver.

Today, he's smiling wide because he also took 1/2 of that 401K and got Bitcoin back when it was a mere $200 each.

He sold the bitcoin and bought 140 acres of prime farm and wooded land. Before all of the recent rural prices sky rocketed.

rScotty, the man had a plan and worked each angle to get to owning the land without having to work decades earning it all. He plans on retiring in 4 years. His place came with an old tractor, old enough not to have a 3PT, just a rear bar. He too wants a used diesel machine without computer controls. So, we both have been looking. :)
