Yep, tape over the camera. Probably 5 years ago maybe more i took FB off my phone. I stopped using google as a search engine when Duck Duck Go was catching on. I took Chrome off when i realized they kept updating google earth and it was causing a conflict with a GPS program I use. FB is a good example and google too. You aren't the customer you are the product being sold.

When I took FB off my phone I noticed that I gained a whole extra day of battery life.

It’s a little bit crazy. I have been writing code and building computer systems for over 30 years. The only reason to cover the camera is in case YOU accidentally shared your video. Contrary to popular misconception your phone isn’t listening to your conversations. If you get an ad for something you were talking about it’s because you sent or got an email with that subject (Google does scan your email to target ads). Also, if you communicate regularly with someone on social media or you message with them and THEY look up an item or search a term, or buy something on-line then the ad engines are likely to show you an ad for that, because they assume that you will have common interests.

I agree about the WW2 interment camps for US citizens with German and Japanese heritage. Horrible. Nothing about listening to suspected terrorists compares to internment camps.

Most of the examples given of devices listening speak about getting targeted ads, but most of the fear expressed is about nefarious government.
So, ask yourself, what do you fear most, unbridled capitalism or your government? Only the later can stop the former. Don’t answer here, as thread shouldn’t turn political.
At the end of the day I realize nobody really cares what I do, or where I’ve been, or what I said other than they want to make a buck off me.
