Y'all Been Checkin' Lumber Prices?

Why do they call it 2x4 when it's 1.5" X 3.5"?
My old house the 2x4s measure 2" X 4".

"2x4" is what it is before planing, as a rough cut board.

I remember when I was a kid, Dad decided to build a 60'x40' barn. We found some nice maple trees in the woods. We then cut and hauled them to a local sawmill for the lumber. The lumber was full 2x4's for the studs. I remember when we put up the studs and siding that you could not put a nail into that maple without drilling a hole first. The maple was about as hard as steel.

That's what they start out as in the log. Once they take off saw kerf, dry and plane them and you end up with the nominal size which you mentioned. Hey, at least the 8 foot length isn't 94 inches.

My father once built a 96' long greenhouse, and installed water faucets in the middle of each side. Then he bought a 50 foot hose...
It wasn't long enough to reach the ends.

The same reason I tell people I'm still 6' tall. I've shrunk to 5'11" over the years. So maybe they're just elderly 2x4s.

Yeah, but in my experience they usually ARE 96 and 1/8" long or so. If you want exactly 8 feet, you have to check and trim them. It's annoying, but better than the alternative.

I just had to buy some pressure treated 2X4X8's over the weekend to complete a small project here. They were $15.98 each!!! Glad I am not building anything where I need significant amount of lumber...that is crazy pricing!

I just bought 6 this past weekend myself, $11 something here.

Hopefully they're not selling much at those prices and maybe the prices will come down some.
