David Brown 990. I have grease in my hydraulic oil. I have changed the oil two times. I have been told that if I put too much grease into one of the nipples it can get into the hydraulic oil. Help

I cannot see how putting too much grease in a zerk will cause grease in the hydraulic fluid. Have you used attachments that hook up to your hydraulics? I assume someone contaminated the hydraulics by putting grease in an implement.

I have seen someone put grease in a rotary mower gear box; they assumed it took grease since it looked like a steering wheel grease box. It actually takes a specific weight gear oil and the grease will not withstand the heat and will not lubricate.

I have read where corn head grease can be used in gearboxes instead of oil, I have wanted to try it in one of my tillers because it leaks, just have not got around to it yet.

Hello Xfaxman,

It is obvious the fellow was incorrect. I am in my 50's and look back clearly and see things I have done that make no sense. My learning curve was steep. For example, as a teenager I needed to find a grease like white lithium. There was none in the shop but I found a can of belt grease and shot a little on the tool I was working with. It didn't go well. Who would have thought that a can labeled grease was not slick? Not me at 17.

I'm gonna think that the hydraulic oil has been contaminated with water and what he is seeing is the emulsion of water and hydraulic oil. Keep flushing it out with new oil every 50 hours or so (clean screen and magnet too) until the crud is reduced and the oil stays clean... (flushing some diesel through the sump and letting it drain for several days helps, no running engine though) I had a DB 880 for many years.

agree with above ideas that the hyd fluid has been contaminated by either water, or debris from another implement.
if the hyd fluid reservoir could be contaminated by excessive greasing, than all manner of debris & moisture would be entering the system. just change the hyd fluid & filters
