I would like to know why the OP was treated with such hostility.
Several have acted as if Massey was something beyond reproach. The backlash from some one reporting a bad experience with a machine is just plain wrong.
Maybe he did go about incorrectly by posting the message in different forums but his message was and is not posted with anything but his truth.
I purchased a MF 1528 new in 2005. I also had many problems with the tractor. First the front axle broke off as I was mowing a hay field. The front axle dropped into a "bull hole" and the result was the welds that hold the axle to the frame broke off. There is a 1 1/2 inch strap of flat steel that runs across the frame from side to side. It is welded to the frame without any supports or gussets of any kind. The entire axle assembly is bolted to the strap by 2 bolts. They are metric bolts but they are near the 3/8 size of bolts. The result of this poor design is the front axle is attached to the tractor with 3 inches of weld that broke easily. This was to become a known weakness in this tractor.
The axle, when it broke off, also damaged the pinion gear as well as the shaft that applies the power when the tractor was in 4 x 4. This resulted in nearly $2,000 of repairs.
The axle broke off the second time as the front wheel touched a small 2 inch walnut tree as I was working on a very steep hill side.
I never repaired the 4 x 4 parts the second time as I ran out of money and the tractor was used for several years as a 2 x 4 tractor.
The second problem occurred as my son was trimming up a field that we were brush hogging. As he backed over a small clump of brush the PTO stopped turning. It turned out to be one of the gears was now toothless.
The third major problem occurred as a friend was cleaning out a pond with a backhoe and laying the waste on the bank. I was using the box blade to gather the waste. As I was pulling away from the pond with the box blade down I saw a puddle of oil on the ground. The rear axle housing on the right side of the tractor was broken. It had cracked open as if it was an egg shell struck against the edge of a bowl.
The tractor was used but it only had 2,000 hours on it. The engine, transmission, hydraulics, and loader were never a problem. The construction of the frame and the rear axle were very questionable. Along with the damage to the PTO the result was it had to go.
Thousands of dollars for repairs and the non working 4 x4 resulted in a new Kubota
L2501.
But I am in agreement with the OP. Massey and Agco are not the same as the old Masseys. His message to avoid MF / Agco are valid.
I do not think the age of this thread means that it should not be revisited. There are still 1528, 1531, and I believe the number is 1538 that are still out there and may not be the best tractors to buy.
