Rpm's and long downhill runs

I wouldn't let either of you run my lawnmower much less my tractors.
If anyone ran my equipment that way they would be fired on the spot and left to walk.

Your lawnmower is designed and intended to run at the governed rpm. Push the throttle all the way and and mow grass.

How does it “tell” you? The hydro starts to whine? The engine bogs down? I know what my tractor can do and I don’t try to do more than that.
A light on the dash of my 70's IH2500b would come on and a buzzer would sound if the HST was being overworked. It was sometimes an indicator of time to change the filter/screen, or fluid level too low, but mostly it was because the unit was going to stall, so back off the foot pedals.

Yep. I had a lawn tractor that didn't even even have a throttle control, just start and run positions.

I don't see what all the fuss is about. So what if the exhaust carbons up? When it does, take care of it. For those who think that somehow wear is less and fuel more economical at high revs..... Well, there probably isn't much I can say to someone who thinks that way.

Mine is pre-tier IV & I rarely run full RPM. I like to work the land with our tractors and find it more enjoyable when the engine isn't racing all the time. This is a hobby; why would I want to race through it? If I didn't enjoy the work I could probably swap for an apartmant in some town.

Mostly I set the throttle for about 1200 RPM and let the auto-throttle, load sensing, & HST+ take care of themselves. Yes, I overbought on horsepower. Deliberately.

If I really wanted to do something nice for the tractor downhill, I'd add front brakes.

I've had a HST tractor since 1991 and don't know if it's right or wrong but I've always ran them from 1800 to PTO RPM
depending on circumstances.
