Fell in love with a toilet seat

I understand. We've had several older relatives go through similar. My mother in-law is going to be 82 this year. Her husband, who was 13 years older than her, passed away a year and a half ago. She was able to take care of him until the end. They were a very active couple, with several other couples. Always going out to dinner, shows, the casinos, bus trips, etc. However, the other couples are all my father in-law's age, and they are winding down as well. They rarely get together anymore. My mother in-law goes to visit them, but none of them come to visit her. She was also very active in her high school alumni group. That's right. High school group in their 80s. Several dozen of them still friends that used to get together every month. Covid put the brakes on that. Now that things are easing up, most of them are also too old to get out as often.

So she's basically living alone in a 1700 square foot 3 bedroom home that's empty. We eat dinner with her at least once a week, and she comes over other days. But last week was the first time she told us she was lonely. She's got her dog, but that's not another human. So I'm guessing that she's hinting at being lonely and might want to start looking at retirement communities where there are more people around. We'll start having those discussions in the near future.

I’m reading every post after 4 hours +/- 3:30 to 7:30 at the skilled nursing facility with mom.

Staff said they have two different patients… the one when I’m there and the one when she is alone.

The one alone has little interest in eating or medicine or physical therapy…

The one with me and or her retired nurse friend eats everything, takes her medicine and wants to get going and sings along with Dean Martin, Doris Day, Al Martino and Freddy Quinn and falls asleep to Moonlight Serenade

I’m not that old and not musical with zero music collection but the smart phone is amazing for this.

Throw in a little Andy Kim, The Archies, Singing Nun and Vanilla Ice and we rock the evening… and she really gets into the beat of Ice Baby… who knew?

The spirit is willing even if the mind and body is not quite there…

She does tell staff she won’t be there too long as her son will be taking her home soon… and is very polite with them with thank you and you are doing a good job…

One thing that puts some of the staff a little on edge is she prays the Rosary in the morning and again in the afternoon…

Her nursing school was convent based with almost all becoming nuns.

Mom’s RN career spans nearly 50 years leaving the farm to enter the convent nursing school at 18.

Working with my carpenter to remodel 2 bathrooms. We went tile shopping yesterday as well as to choose fixtures and tubs.

Asked if I could use the restroom (in the showroom, done up nice) and I noticed the light that automatically came on inside the toilet.

Pulled my pants down, sat on the seat and I was in love 😂

Funny enough, pricing at this local shop was better than I could find anything online.

Look up Toto bathroom seats. Honestly, don't think I'd spend that kind of money for my own bathroom (although I'm kind of tempted), but that heated seat will work wonders for my dad living in the basement.

Heck, there are other lower cost options from what I've seen online per heated bathroom seats, but if you have any elderly parents living with you, I have no doubt they'll love it (my dad keeps the basement between 78F-80F year round).
If you are talking about those Toto "space toilets" that spray your butt and blow dry with air, I hate them! Sat on many in Japan and I really just want a regular toilet!

I think it depends on your mental capacity. I'm no Stephan Hawking, but if my brain still worked and I was enjoying life, and had the means to pay someone to take care of me, and not make my wife do it, I'd stick around a bit longer.
That's a tough call. I've always been active and outdoorsy. Not sure I'd consider life worth living if I wasn't able to get out and around anymore. Having full mental capabilities would probably make it worse.

At Skilled Nursing the first question was what does mom like to do?

I said walking several times a day followed by working in the yard…

When asked about TV, Video, FaceTime, Games they were surprised when I said no… probably less than 30 minutes a week TV.

If weather is bad she will read… especially newspapers.

I think for some the transition isn’t a big deal if their day is watching TV or talking on the phone eating…

For those that live to be outside it’s like being in jail…

The title of this thread makes me think it should read something like "After a rough night out on the town".

Honestly, don't care about spraying my butt and blow drying it, but sorry, that heated seat was something else.

However, got to give the girl in the showroom credit, she did point out that you don't need to worry about any more toilet paper shortages LOL

The last couple of years my father in-law was alive, he'd start singing in Polish, and pray and read the bible every day, things he did not do in years past. Sometimes my mother in-law would tell us that in the middle of the night, he'd get up out of bed and start dancing around the bedroom, saying he felt great! Tired of fighting it, she'd just watch the show until he got tired and came back to bed.

She was very good at dealing with him, and fortunately, he was a good natured patient and never got mean or too ornery for her to handle.
