Insecticide on Wood Pile

Treat the ground around and under the pile. Use a granulated product.

Tarping seems like it would keep too much moisture in.


I would move a few day's worth into the unheated, but attached garage. It was cold enough to keep bugs dormant until it was time to go into the stove where it was a little too warm for them.

Actually tarping it with plastic is the preferred method that USFS recommends for destroying bark beetles and other nasty insects in firewood. And if done over the summer it only takes a month to kill all insects in the wood.

Up here, you can tarp the top but the sides have to be open to breathe.... Otherwise, the wood will rot.

Do it long enough to kill wood borers and other nasty insects, then stack the wood in racks to dry. One month is all that’s needed.

I set my firewood on a pad of class "A". I hose the class "A" down with weed/bug killer before I put the wood on it. Seems to work pretty good.

I really like the borax idea. The class "A" should retain quite a bit of the borax to work over time.

That only works if your wood is bug free to start. If your tree was cut because of ash borers or bark beetles, these insects are already in the wood, and heat is needed to kill them.

I’m not sure what all gets in my wood but lots of bugs. Mine is stored on a concrete pad but there are some joints in the concrete that bugs get through. I know for sure I have termites, ants, wasps, cockroaches and some kind of boring insects that gets in the hickory and makes sawdust. I keep in well away from the house and it goes from outside into the fire.
