Y'all Been Checkin' Lumber Prices?

I just checked prices on 4x6x8 pressure treated. I paid $17.98 about a year ago, needed a few more last month.... still the same price. Today when I checked they were up to $33.88.....

Worst of it is they are the same bundles that were there 6 months ago.... not even new fresh ones.... Jeesh

$18.98 at the Home Depot near me.

Yeah, I'm going to check AT the store. I saw 2 whole bundles there a couple days ago.... When I checked online today, it showed the $33 price, but "NONE" in stock within 100 miles....and that they were 'unavailable' at the stores.
That should have been a clue that the website was wrong. I know at least 3 HD within 30-40 miles have them in stock.

Now I'm really curious......

Couple tips I have found from extensively searching my local Home Depot inventories during this supply chain limited era. I have 3 HD stores I can choose to shop at in my region.

1) they will often list the same size and type of lumber under different SKUs/search results if they come from different suppliers
2) so if they switch suppliers on a particular lumber type, sometimes the OLD listing will stay in the search results, with the OLD price from when they sold out of them, and will just now say "unavailable"
3) also they will sometimes have multiple entries with different part numbers for the same exact quantity of inventory available. Seems odd but whatever
4) always set your local store on the website, and then always click the "in stock at Store Today" button in the top left (it also shows for nearby stores). No reason to search mythical inventory from across the country.

Weird, i just went to hd and lowes ….needed a dozen 2x4 8 footers. Lowes had them for $14.99 each and had several hundred in stock. H depot wanted $5.89 but had none left in stock. Im not willing to pay $15 for a stinking 2x4….so i guess ill wait.

My Menards has 1500 2x4x8’ premium studs available at $5.50 per.

Not bad considering the last time I purchased at $8.50 per

How else ya' gonna git 12 foot of wood in a roller skate?

Nissan Cube Wagon Models, Price, Specs, Reviews | Cars.com

It's just barely 12 foot long bumper to bumper. Cargo area can't be more than 4 or 5'.

I can get a 12' foot board almost fully inside my Taurus wagon. Have to open the front passenger side window and let a bit stick out. 10 footers go inside, no issue. And I've had 14s and 16s on the roof strapped down.
Buy a trailer, put racks on the car or rent the HD van for an hour. People who drive that probably don't haul very often.

Once you have the sawmill, the saws, the skid steers, etc I'm sure it is pennies to produce a 4x4x8.
You are right, assuming that you have a wood supply. Yet I can still cut the trees, sell them to the mill, and buy the KD 2x4 for less money.

But if I'm a single mom who wants to build my own diy shelf or whatever, I'm better off to just buy the lumber vs invest in my own sawmill.

Are y'all really so close-minded that you can't step outside your own box and see that what works for you isn't always the best for the other few billion people on the planet?

I wouldn't buy the precut lumber, but I can understand how it's a good fit for some people.

When I was 25, I built a rabbit hutch on the living room floor of my tiny Boston apartment. Hand saw, hammer, screw drivers, glue, tape measure, and I think I had one clamp. I got the wood to the apartment in my Honda Civic, so good chance I had someone at the store cut it for me, although I don't recall.

Three+ decades later...I own a sawmill. And some trees.

I've lived inside both boxes.

City folks poke fun at country folks. Country folks poke fun at city folks.

And that's okay.
