Mahindra Emax 20s vs Massey Ferguson GC1723e

Im looking into a couple of sub compact tractor options, specifically the Mahindra Emax 20s vs Massey Ferguson GC1723e. Just wondering what people think about the two options. Thanks

Your 2009 - 2022 T-B-N history has been primarily researching 2-WD Lawn & Garden tractors without a (Ferguson) Three Point Hitch. Any brand 4-WD, TPH, diesel, subcompact tractor will be more versatile. During the last three years new compact tractors have increased in price 50%.

Kubota just about owns the subcompact tractor category.

Mahindra subcompact tractors are badged for Mahindra by TYM of Korea. A "Mahindra" subcompact might be cheaper from a TYM dealer rather than Mahindra. TYM also badges "RK" tractors for Rural King.The EMax 20 has a well regarded 1.0L Yanmar brand diesel engine which has to turn at unusually high 3,000 rpm to achieve rated horsepower.

The MF is probably produced by AGCO, the tractor conglomerate which owns the MF brand. Its engine is a well regarded Iseki brand diesel from Japan.

I'm not going to knock the Mahindra, but I will say it could be argued the GC is the finest subcompact on the market.

Yes it's true I have gotten by with a Case 446 for many years now, while considering other options when available in my area. It's only this year that I started looking at the newer compacts.

As usual there are really not many available in the area of Ontario that I am in, and you are right the prices have gone up a lot, like everything else. I am considering a newer used model or brand new model.

The dealers close to me are Mahindra (closest), MF, Kioti, Bobcat, Deere. The only one that has new stock is the Mahindra, the others are wait lists or used as they come in.

I did not realize the Mahindra is built by TYM, I was told to avoid these by someone because parts are had to get in Canada, I'm not sure if this is true or not. The Massey GC has quite a bit more power at the PTO than the Mahindra. I think Bobcat is made by Kioti and I don't see much wrong with that brand either.

I've noticed a few things about TYM; to start, they're capable of building a solid tractor. A lot of TYM built Mahindra owners are on this forum with a lot of positive things to say, particularly regarding comfort and ergonomics. There are a lot of happy TYM owners as well, yet you see a fair number of negatives too. Those really seem to come down to the dealer; poor dealer prep, poor dealer support, things of that nature. Now I'm not saying there aren't negatives to all brands, but you can look through the threads on here and learn a lot. The biggest thing is that TYM has both improved consistently over the years, and they just acquired Kukji, the parent company of Branson. Kukje builds solid machines, and they just built a big facility in Georgia. So I would think over the next decade you'll see a lot better support from TYM.

The Massey Ferguson GC is just an excellent machine, and has been since it was introduced. It's up there with the Deere 1R and Kubota BX, and parts availability shouldn't be an issue as they sell so many of them.

The new Kioti CS20 series subcompacts are really nice, they really designed it to fix the weak points of the CS10. Kioti has impressed me enough that I just purchased CK2610, so I'm a little biased, but not too much.

I have a Mahindra 4510 built in 2004. My problem has been very slow parts availability even on some minor parts. Waiting for a door part since Jan 2022.

FIVE (5) tractor brand choices are not enough? Consider that the universe of Three Point Hitch tractors are based on former Ferguson patents which expired 1955 - 1958. (Ferguson) TPH tractors only differ in function in minor ways. There has been little change in the basic TPH tractor design since 1936, 86 years.

Brand? Models to look at or avoid? Buy new or used?

The design of the Three Point Hitch tractor has been marketed in the USA since 1939 -- 82 years in 2021.

The basic design is generic.

Kubota and Deere have most of the USA market through 6,000 pound bare weight tractors. But this Kubota/Deere predominance is regional.

The up and coming tractor brands are Korean: Kioti, LS and Branson. There are other Korean brands. You have to critically assess dealer stability while shopping minor brands.

Korean manufacturing labor is paid 50% of what Deere pays its union work force. Japanese manufacturing labor is paid 70% of what Deere pays its union work force. Labor costs strongly influence tractor prices.



We have the following brands within an hour of us.

• Kubota
• LS
• TYM
• KIOTI
• Massey Ferguson
• John Deere

I know that a lot depends on the dealer and their willingness to help, but should I stay away from any of these brands?

Start with the nearest dealer and work out.

Transporting a tractor for service is expensive and inconvenient, whether you trailer it or the dealer trailers it.

The compact Mahindras are produced by TYM. The heavier than compact Mahindras are made by Mahindra in India. India is purported to be the world's largest unit volume market for tractors, but an unknown number of reported units are two-wheel, walk-behind paddy tractors.

Since pandemic interruptions began, Kubota has prioritized parts at the expense of assembled tractors.

Much agreed. The MF GC tractors are very very nice. I really like them and preferred it over the competition in its size category.

I would recommend the OP to visit the local dealerships and test drive the different options.

Yes Bobcat tractors are made by Daedong which makes Kioti, but they use their own loaders. Massey is going to be a more refined tractor for sure even with the E model. I don't have any experience with the mahindras but have heard of quite a few people with issues and have noticed many for sale lately on the used market only a year or 2 old. LS tends to be a decent tractor but they do have some issues with small parts breaking . Massey and kioti would be my 1st stops

I looked at Mahindra first back in 2014 when I bought my first tractor. Dealership was useless. Appeared to be nice machines though.

Bought a 2014 MF GC1710tlb. Sold that in 2019 at about 575 hrs and bought a GC1723tlb. Now at 640 hrs. No real issues with either.

I use them in our small farm and commercially.
