I believe there is an untouched market out there of homeowners/hobby farmers who could use a tractor, but don't know it.

Building a tractor brand from scratch that has no current US presence, like Summit is doing, could be just the ticket for these folks. Give them a full featured tractor at a strongly competitive price point. The key will be the spare parts availability, along with a minimum level of service.

Brands built off a major (TYM) like Cabelas and RK both attempted to tap into this market, at some varying levels of success. For everyone who comes on this board and complains about their tractor issue, there are hundreds (if not more) out in the fields working without issue.

There's really no incentive, outside of resale value, for a light user to buy a premium priced machine (JD, Kubota). Summit will attract these users, just like Kioti, Branson, and LS do, but at a wider distribution net, not dependent on the fickleness of some small-time, marginally committed dealers.

I think that Atwoods (never been there) sounds a bit like Peavey Mart or Buckerfields in Western Canada. Perhaps a bit like Princess Auto also. Home Depot carries some yard equipment also. None of those are tractor specialists.

Always been my contention that the more 'manufacturers' there are and this isn't a manufacturer, just another importer, the smaller the pie slice gets and when the slice gets too small, the small fish fold. Kind of reminds me of the 'Cabelas' tractor deal and to a lesser extent the RK deal.

I'll stick with an established brand with many dealers myself. Don't need an 'orphan' tractor to deal with.

25 HP model does not compare well to a Branson 2515 The loader itself weighs about double on the Branson and lifts More than twice as much and it also lifts almost 20 inches higher as well at 105 inches to 85" pin height
5 lug rear axle versus 8 on the Branson 3 range hydro versus 2 speed. etc.

Lots of people bought the box store JD's built by MTD and lots of them are junk today. None of the box stores nor Tractor Supply can even do routine service on them. Very poor choice. Bought all 3 of my Cubs (2 zero turns and the rototiller from my Kubota dealer (he's an authorized Cub Cadet servicing dealer). Might have cost me a tad more but at least I can get parts from them. I don't consider any MTD mowers to be long lasting and that includes the TSC Husky (MTD built) brand. I see TSC is selling Bad Boy zero turns now. Scary.

...and just as many who have issues that never came to this site.. This isn't the only tractor related site in the cyber world. Just one of many.

Candidly, I'm color blind. The Summit tractors remind me of the defunct Cabelas tractors. I have to wonder how many people that bought them have issues getting them serviced at a dealer.

When they closed them out here, they went cheap.

From the little I've read it seems hit and miss; a solid TYM dealer realizes that they are Cabela Man's one stop shop for parts and service, and will cater to them. Someone with their head between their cheeks will chastise Cabela Man for not buying from them, and there are far too many dealers out there like that.

Of course my only real knock against TYM is their motley assortment of dealers; oh, and that they seem to use Amazon* as a parts supplier on their small machines.

*I don't believe this to be true, but that they're using the cheapest, most generic supplier they can for link arms and whatnot. It's a joke, a bad joke, but a joke.

MTD has not, nor do they, produce any of Deere's lawn and garden tractors; even the 100 series, produced in Tennessee, is built by John Deere. Now, that facility in Greenville used to be owned by Murray if I remember correctly, and I think that might be where these rumors come from. On top of that there is no difference between the 100 series sold in box stores, and the ones sold at dealers, and on top of this local dealers are contracted to perform assembly, and provide support.

I spent 7 years with a Deere D160, and keeping in mind that it's a lawn tractor I treated it as such- I mowed my lawn and pulled a yard cart. I also familiarized myself with their weak points, and was sure to operate accordingly. When I moved to a property that was not as compatible with it I was able to sell it for 2/3 of what it cost new, which was nice. Coincidently enough, the local woman that purchased it is still mowing with it.

I speak highly of these machines because they don't deserve the bum rap they've been given- well, not all of them. Machines below the D160 and current S170 now use T40J transaxles, which were developed for use in rear-engine riders, and that's a no go. Of course, they're not the only ones, Cub Cadet recently replaced the K46 with the T40 in most of their XT1 lineup. Cost cutting I suppose.

Replaced it with a Cub Cadet XT3 GSX, only to replace that with a subcompact lol.

That Cub might have been the best lawnmower I've ever owned.

I have no idea how many acres of bahia grass that I cut with an old 2 blade 38" cut MTD riding mower with a BS cast iron sleeved engine before I could afford or was willing to afford a zero turn mower and other than a couple of selinoids and blades never had a problem other than after about year 5 I had to patch holes on the deck until it got to thin to weld on, coming from a 22" push mower it was great, funny how we get spoiled.

So basically a Solis with some Yanmar rear panels. I do wonder why a tractor that size is only 2 range. Didn't they say over 3k lbs with loaded tires? That's Kubota L series weight, though it looks more Yanmar Yt235 /Kubota LX size

Really, I didn't know that...lol So is Troy Bilt and some other brands a well. The difference with Cub Cadet versus the lower quality stuff is they are actually built better (and cost more) and come with grease fittings too. Modern Tool and Die gobbled up a lot of independent brands years ago. We tend to refer to them as 'More Tools Desired'....

When I was a youngster, MTD's world headquarters was about 3 miles from where I grew up, in Brookpark, Ohio.

The Summit brand means nothing to me as the size of their units aren't something I need at all. To me, it's the old bait and switch stuff. Import a cookie cutter unit with some 'features' that others don't have standard and sell them without a service capable dealer network and when issues arise, just play deaf and when they don't sell to expectations, dissolve the brand and leave the owners to fend for themselves.. I wish them good luck but far as ever buying one, not in the cards for me.

Ayuh, IH spun-off and sold Cub Cadet to MTD in 1981; that said, it did operate with relative autonomy as Cub Cadet Corporation, though that ended some time in the early-2000's if I remember right. It's funny, MTD has owned Cub twice as long as IH did. MTD can, has, and I'm sure will continue to produce fine machines- if you're willing to pay for it.
